NASU, SSANU Strike Nears End As FG Promises Payment Resolution

The Federal Government has appealed to the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) to end their ongoing strike, which has forced public universities across Nigeria to shut down since Monday.

Dr. Yusuf Sununu, the outgoing Minister of State for Education, conveyed this appeal on Thursday, representing the newly appointed Education Minister, Dr. Tunji Alaussa, in talks with union leaders.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that Sununu assured the union members that efforts were underway to resolve the issues that triggered the strike, particularly the government’s delay in releasing four months’ withheld salaries from 2022.

During the discussions, Sununu emphasized the government’s commitment to reaching a resolution, stating, “We have reviewed the causes of this strike and updated the unions on the Ministry of Education’s steps toward addressing their grievances.”

He also urged the unions to cooperate with the government to sustain a stable academic environment.

NASU and SSANU’s Joint Action Committee chairman, Comrade Hassan Makolo, responded positively, expressing optimism about the progress made in the talks. He indicated that the strike would be called off once union members confirm the payment of the outstanding salaries.

“We had a constructive dialogue… Once payment is confirmed, the strike will end,” Makolo said, adding that the unions hope these measures will prevent similar disputes from arising in the future.
