National Assembly Vows to Improve Accessibility and Rights for Persons with Disabilities

National Assembly Promises Better Support for People with Disabilities

The National Assembly has committed to improving the rights and opportunities for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in Nigeria. This pledge includes taking steps to make public spaces and policies more inclusive.

Bashiru Dawodu, Chairperson of the House of Representatives Committee on Disability Matters, shared the Assembly’s efforts to create a supportive environment for PWDs. He pointed out that PWDs can easily access his office, located on the first floor of the House of Representatives wing, as an example of progress.

“We are working to make the National Assembly accessible to everyone,” Dawodu said. He added that the committee is also encouraging other organizations to adopt policies that support PWDs. Recently, a major commercial bank was recognized for providing accessible services to people with disabilities.

However, challenges remain. Critics argue that the National Assembly chambers still lack full accessibility, despite the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act of 2018. This law requires all public buildings to accommodate PWDs, but the 27-year-old design of the Assembly building has made compliance difficult.

Dawodu acknowledged the issue and promised that the committee would continue to push for improvements. He stressed the importance of creating a comfortable and accessible environment for the over 25 million Nigerians living with disabilities.
