The National Grid suffered its second collapse in just two days on Thursday, November 7, plunging large parts of Nigeria into darkness once again.
This latest incident follows a similar collapse on Tuesday, raising fresh concerns over the country’s electricity infrastructure.
EDITOR’S PICKS
EKO HOT BLOG reports that inresponse to Tuesday’s blackout, the National Orientation Agency (NOA) attributed the recurring grid failures to the electricity distribution companies (Discos), alleging that they frequently reject loads due to their inability to handle the capacity of generated electricity.
According to the NOA, the Discos’ failure to adequately distribute the generated power disrupts the stability of the national grid, causing frequent breakdowns.
In a statement released following Tuesday’s collapse — the tenth recorded grid failure in 2024 alone — the NOA emphasized that while power generation has increased, the lack of adequate load acceptance by the Discos is leading to continuous collapses.
The agency’s comments underscore a broader concern about the disconnect between power generation and distribution capacity in Nigeria, where power shortages remain a persistent issue affecting millions.
As efforts continue to restore power, experts have called for immediate intervention to address the systemic issues within the distribution network, which many see as critical to preventing further collapses.
