Eko Hot Blog reports that the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has denied reports that the National Grid has been shut down over the nationwide strike by the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), the Trade Union Congress (TUC), and their affiliates.
The TCN management debunked the reports in a statement on Tuesday.
Recall that the NLC and TUC directed their affiliates nationwide to embark on an indefinite nationwide strike from Tuesday, November 14, 2023.
Subsequently, the Daily Post (not Eko Hot Blog) reported that there was a nationwide blackout due to TCN shutting down the national grid in compliance with labour strike.
However, the electricity transmission regulator has dismissed the newspaper report as “mischievous and baseless.”
The TCN, while noting that its head of public affairs never said the national grid had been shut down, revealed that the grid is intact and supplying bulk electricity to distribution load centers nationwide.
“The Transmission Company of Nigeria hereby states that the publication by Daily Post alleging that the Head of Public Affairs of TCN said that there will be a national blackout is false and totally misleading,” the statement reads.
“The statement is mischievous and baseless as TCN, through the Public Affairs Head, did not make such statement.
“We hereby note that the nation’s grid is intact and supplying bulk electricity to distribution load centers nationwide.
“As at when issuing this statement, the TCN National Control Centre Osogbo which controls bulk power transmission nationwide, is actively operational.
“We would appreciate that reports are made with a sense of responsibility not just to cause panic.”
This reporter observed that current reality is consistent with the TCN statement as many Nigerians in various parts of the country reported having access to electricity on Tuesday, contrary to the Daily Post report.
