Nations League: Greece Stun England With Last-Minute Winner At Wembley

Published

on

England interim manager Lee Carsley’s all-out attacking approach backfired spectacularly as they suffered a shocking defeat to Greece in the UEFA Nations League at Wembley.

Jude Bellingham’s 87th-minute strike appeared to salvage a lackluster England performance after Vangelis Pavlidis gave Greece a deserved lead with a clinical finish just four minutes into the second half.

EDITOR’S PICKS

Pavlidis struck again deep into stoppage time to secure Greece’s well-earned victory, delivering a humbling blow to Carsley and his team.

Without injured captain Harry Kane, Carsley opted for an unconventional lineup, deploying Bellingham in a false nine role and surrounding him with attackers Phil Foden, Anthony Gordon, Bukayo Saka, and Cole Palmer.

The result was a chaotic and disjointed display, ending Carsley’s unbeaten run as interim boss. Greece, disciplined and well-organized, had the ball in the net five times, though three goals were disallowed for offside.

England were fortunate to survive until the second half, with Jordan Pickford needing a crucial goalline clearance from Levi Colwill after a mistake left him stranded.

Pavlidis eventually broke the deadlock, and the Greek players dedicated their celebrations to former teammate George Baldock, who tragically passed away earlier in the week at age 31.

But Greece remained dangerous throughout and sealed their win in dramatic fashion, leaving Carsley and England facing tough questions after a bruising night.
