Nations League: Van Dijk Withdrawn From Netherlands Squad

Virgil van Dijk has been released from the Netherlands squad ahead of their Nations League clash with Bosnia-Herzegovina on Tuesday.

The Liverpool captain featured for the full 90 minutes in the team’s 4-0 victory over Hungary on Saturday, a result that secured second place in Group C and a spot in the Nations League quarter-finals set for March.

Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong has also been released by manager Ronald Koeman. De Jong made his first international appearance in 13 months during the Hungary match, following a prolonged recovery from a series of ankle injuries.

“For both Frenkie and Virgil it is better for them to leave the training camp at this moment,” Koeman said.

“That decision was taken on medical grounds, with of course the interest of the players coming first.”

Van Dijk has played every minute of Liverpool’s Premier League season to help them establish a five-point lead at the top of the table.

Arne Slot’s side will return to action on Sunday at Southampton.
