Nationwide Strike Suspended, Not Called Off, Says NLC

Eko Hot Blog reports that The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) clarified that the nationwide strike was suspended and not called off, with the intention of allowing the federal government to fulfill its part of the agreement reached with labor officials.

As a reminder, the NLC and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) suspended the planned strike, originally scheduled for Tuesday, October 3, 2023, following discussions with Federal Government representatives at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. The organized labor had planned the strike in response to the impact of fuel subsidy removal and the government’s failure to meet their demands.

During an interview on Arise News, NLC President Joe Ajaero stated that negotiations between the union and the federal government regarding wage increases and other demands are still in the preliminary stage.

Ajaero explained that the NLC leadership would convene with its members after the 30-day ultimatum to assess what progress has been made and the efforts expended.

He stated, “The union is still at the preliminary stage of discussion with the federal government. We urge the government to keep its part of the bargain. We will get back to our people after the 30-day ultimatum to see what we have achieved and the efforts made so far.”
