Stomach ulcers, also known as gastric ulcers, are open sores within the lining of the stomach which has to do with acid.
As a large amount of acid in the stomach can lead to severe damage, peptic ulcer is extremely painful.
The most common cause of stomach ulcer is the bacterium called Helicobacter pylori, or H. pylori.
In addition, Ulcers may also be caused by overuse of painkillers, such as aspirin and other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories such as ibuprofen or naproxen.
While stomach ulcers are treated with antibiotics and medications to reduce acid in the stomach, research has shown that there are also some natural home remedies that may be useful in managing a stomach ulcer.
These include:
- Flavonoids
Flavonoids, otherwise known as bioflavonoids, research suggests an effective treatment for stomach ulcers.
Flavonoids are compounds that occur naturally in many fruits and vegetables. Examples of foods and drinks rich in flavonoids are soybeans, legumes red grapes, broccoli, apples, berries, teas, especially green tea.
Research reveals that such foods help the body fight against the H. pylori bacteria.
- Probiotics
These include the living bacteria and yeast that provide healthy and important microorganisms to the digestive tract.
Probiotics are present in many common foods, particularly fermented foods.
They are buttermilk, yoghurt, miso, kimchi.
Research has revealed that probiotics help in the fight against H. pylori just as they also increase the recovery rate for people with ulcers.
- Honey
Depending on the plant it’s derived from, honey can contain up to 200 elements, including polyphenols and other antioxidants.
It is a powerful antibacterial and studies have shown that Honey helps to inhibit H. pylori growth.
Honey is far from simply sweet but as long as an ulcer patient has a normal blood sugar level, one can enjoy honey as one can, with the reward of perhaps soothing your ulcers.
- Garlic
Garlic extract, research has shown to inhibit H. pylori growth in lab, animal, and human trials.
If an ulcer patient doesn’t enjoy the taste of garlic, one can take garlic extract in supplement form as garlic acts as a blood thinner.
- Cranberry
Studies have shown that Cranberry help decreases urinary tract infections by preventing bacteria from settling on the walls of the bladder, just as Cranberry and cranberry extract also help in the fight against H. pylori.
As a patient, you can drink cranberry juice, eat cranberries, or take cranberry supplements.
However, it is worthy to note that too much cranberry in any form may cause stomach and intestinal discomfort due to its high sugar content.
Therefore, you should commence with small amounts and increase gradually.
- Fruits, vegetables, and whole grains
Another way to fight ulcer is taking a diet centred on fruits, vegetables.
Research has shown that a vitamin-rich diet helps the body heal ulcer as quickly as possible.
