The Nigerian Navy has announced the rescue of eight police officers and one civilian after a boat accident near the Agbura community in Bayelsa State.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that the incident happened while the passengers were traveling to Yenagoa. Their speedboat struck a submerged wreck, causing it to capsise.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Navy’s spokesperson, Commodore Aiwuyor Adams-Aliu, attributed the successful rescue to the quick response of naval personnel stationed in the area. He confirmed that all nine passengers and three rifles belonging to the police officers were recovered.

“On December 24, 2024, Nigerian Navy personnel deployed around the Agbura community, Bayelsa State, conducted a search and rescue operation, successfully saving eight police officers and one civilian. Three rifles belonging to the officers were also recovered,” the statement read.

The victims received first aid before being transferred to the Federal Medical Centre in Yenagoa for further treatment. Commodore Adams-Aliu added that the submerged wreck responsible for the accident had been identified and marked to prevent future incidents.

The recovered weapons have been secured and will be handed over to the Bayelsa State Police Command. The Navy emphasized that the operation highlights the effective collaboration between the Nigerian Navy and other security agencies.
