  • This follows the commission’s initial plan to bar Glo subscribers from calling MTN lines.

Eko Hot Blog reports that the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has announced an extension of the period during which Globacom subscribers can call MTN lines by 21 days.

This decision follows the commission’s initial plan to bar Glo subscribers from calling MTN lines, as communicated in the Pre-Disconnection Notice issued on January 8, 2024.

In the initial notice, the NCC approved MTN Nigerian Communications Plc. to begin the phased disconnection of Globacom Limited starting from January 18, 2024, due to an unresolved interconnection debt dispute between the two telecom operators.

However, in a recent statement signed by the Director of Public Affairs, Reuben Mouka, the NCC revealed that an agreement has been reached between the parties to resolve all outstanding issues.

As a result, the commission has decided to put the phased disconnection on hold for 21 days from January 17, 2024.

While expressing the expectation that MTN and Glo will resolve all outstanding issues within this timeframe, the NCC emphasized the importance of settling interconnect debts by all operating companies as a necessary component of regulatory compliance.

The commission highlighted that its approval for disconnection could impact consumers, urging Mobile Network Operators and other licensees in the telecom industry to adhere to the terms and conditions of their licenses and interconnection agreements.

Earlier reports suggested that the NCC would provide further information about the situation and advise Glo subscribers on the next steps.

Dr Aminu Maida, the new Executive Vice Chairman of the NCC, emphasized that the primary concern is the consumer, and both parties have committed to resolving the issues within the extended 21-day period.

He also mentioned that the commission is working on creating a framework for a permanent solution to the issue of interconnect debt in the telecom industry, aiming to improve the quality of experience for telecommunications consumers and minimize the need for a double SIM regime in the country.

The dispute between MTN and Glo revolves around interconnect charges, with MTN briefly disconnecting Glo subscribers in 2019 over a debt of N4 billion.

A source close to Glo has stated that the telco has already made outstanding payments within the allowed window.
