The Commandant, Nigeria Correctional Service, NCS, Staff college Barnawa Kaduna, Assistant Controller General Corrections, ACGC. Peter Pevigo has called on the public to support Borstal Training institutions across the country towards building the mindset of teenagers to enable them to become useful members of the Society.
The Commandant made the call during the official launched of the 2021 Borstal table and wall calendar at the Borstal Training institute, in Kaduna.
Mr Peter Pevigo explained that the Institute which is an arm of the Nigerian correctional service is saddled with the responsibility of remoulding, rehabilitating and reintegrating young offenders within the ages of 16-23 into the society.
According to the Commandant, the institute trained and retrained juveniles who had committed different offences and are said to have gone beyond parental care.
He said, in line with the core mandate of the training institute, alot of reformatory programmes which include vocational studies ranging from tailoring, carpentry, painting, building, photography, as well as academics and psycho- Social support had been designed to help them become good citizens and contribute meaningfully to the development of the country and be self-sustaining.
“By God’s grace, we have turned out quite alot of students that have been successful and found themselves in various spheres of economic endeavours in this country,
“These children as they are here, they are undergoing very serious academic Training and before you know it most of them will passed their examination and you will find them in our universities studying various courses,
“As you are here, we call upon you to support the school so that we can redouble our effort in training these children so that tomorrow they would be useful citizens to this great country” He explained.
Describing the institution as a juvenile home, Mr. Pevigo said the Nigerian Correctional Service should be rank second after NNPC due to its immensed contributions to the growth of the nation’s economy.
According to him the NNPC uses one formula to process it’s crude into a desired result, the NCS uses criminals within her disposal to give the nation the workforce it deserves to make the Country great.
“If you look at the NNPC, they use the crude, from the crude, they are able to processed and give us various items that are consumables and exported,
“But as for the Nigerian Correctional Service, our raw material/ crude are the criminals, people who have failed to take to corrections from their parents and communities, we subject them to our own treatment and we turned out pastors, tailors, Carpenters, photographers and academicians among others,
“For the NNPC, they have a formula that if you follow strictly it will give you the desired result, but for the case of the NCS, no one formula gives all, for each criminal individual, we have a unique treatment process.
“While NNPC is using the crude to give the nation what it deserves, we are using our criminals to give the nation the workforce that it deserves to make the nation great” He maintained.
The Principal of the institute Dr. Rosemary Uche Ogabu who said the event was aimed at drawing the attention of the public on the existence of the Institute, appealed to the relevant authorities to provide them with modern vocational equipments, standardized library as well as ICT for the computer study centre of the school.
Mrs. Rosemary Uche said BTI has 220 students who are currently undergoing academic and vocational Training, stressed the need for parents, Organizations and well-spirited individuals to come to the aid of BTI to enable the institute deliver effectively on its mandate of reformation for sustainable development of the country.
The event featured a display of intelligence and drama presentation by students of the school and was attended by many from different walks of life.
