EKO HOT BLOG reports that the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Kano State has convicted 37 drug merchants and users between January and March this year. This was revealed by the State Commander of the Agency, Mr Abubakar Idris-Ahmad, who spoke to journalists on Monday.
According to him, the command arrested 352 suspects within the period, and filed 39 fresh cases, while 127 other cases were still pending. The convicted drug peddlers were tried and found guilty by the Federal High Court.
During the period, the command also confiscated a large quantity of drugs, including 955.304kg of cannabis sativa, 1,225.05kg of Codeine and Tramadol, 25 grams of cocaine, 17 grams of heroine and 52 grams of methamphetamine.
Mr Abubakar Idris-Ahmad further revealed that the command had made significant progress in their drug demand reduction efforts, sensitizing over 5,060 people in secondary and tertiary schools, traders’ associations, vigilante groups, political thugs and other groups on the dangers of drug abuse.
The NDLEA commander also appealed to residents to always provide the agency with information on the activities of drug dealers in their community to curb their activities. He urged parents, community leaders and the general public to be vigilant and help tackle the menace of drug trafficking and abuse.
He assured the public that the agency would not relent in its efforts to combat drug abuse and trafficking in the state and other parts of the country. The command would continue to move around in every nook and cranny of the state to ensure a drug-free society, he added.
The NDLEA commander’s statement is part of the agency’s efforts to rid the country of drug abuse and trafficking, which has become a serious problem in recent times. With the conviction of 37 drug peddlers in Kano state, it is expected that the menace of drug trafficking and abuse will be significantly reduced in the state.
