The Chairman, National Drug Laws Enforcement Agency, (NDLEA) Brig.-Gen Buba Marwa, says the agency has confiscated over N60 billion worth of illicit drugs in the last two months, Ekohotblog reports.
Speaking at a Colloquium themed, “Walk Away from Drugs” organised by the Ekiti Ministry of Justice on Wednesday in Ado-Ekiti, Marwa bemoaned the scourge of illicit drug in the country, describing the situation as worrisome.
He averred that drug abuse is global menace that transcends physical boundaries, ethnicity or religion, adding that if access to illegal drugs is blocked, crime rate in the country will drop drastically.
“The menace is worrisome, that within the last two months, more than N60 billion worth of illicit drugs have been ceased and perpetrators arrested and prosecuted.
“If access to drugs is prevented, criminality can be reduced by 50 percentin the country” Marwa said.
The NDLEA boss, called for conscious and deliberate efforts by stakeholders on the campaign against the use of illicit drugs among the citizenry.
He advised that parents should forthwith demand drug certificate before giving their daughters and sons hands in marriage.
Marwa said every community in the country is plagued by illicit drug menace and the situation has reached an alarming and frightening height.
“This will be the beginning of reducing drug usage and prevailing economic effects on the nation.”
