Marriage is a Union of two persons coming from different backgrounds, with the intention to building family together.
It is the wish of the couple to have a happy marriage life, with both of them in good health.
It is also in the interest of the intending couple to carry out some tests and if any sickness is found, treatment could commence early enough, or if it is the type that is manageable, both couple would be aware and take precaution.

These tests are required either during courtship or immediately the intending couple are ready to get married.
However, there are some medical tests prerequisite for marriage, for the couple to achieve their wishes of having healthy children and for them to remain in good health, till death do them part.
When a man or woman knows his or her intending partner’s health status, it will enable them take proper care as required.
However, some of these tests include
Blood Group compatibility test
Blood groups need to be compatible with each other to avoid problems during pregnancy and producing children with sickle cell Anemia.
There are some couples who got married without undergoing this test and the result is that some of their children were born with Sickle Cell Anemia.
One of such couples is Mrs Angelina Okwu. She told Correspondent Grace Ihesiulo that she got married in ignorance of the disorder.
According to Mrs Okwu, two of her children have the condition. She added that Sickle Cell Anemia is expensive to manage.
Compatibility testing is performed when both intending couple submit their blood samples.
A situation where the test is done and found out that the intending couple would not be compertible for marriage, the intention for both of them to get married, would then be cancelled.
When a transfusion is given, it is preferable for patients to receive blood of the same ABO and RhD group.
Fertility Test
This is essential as these issues can then be addressed as early as possible without causing the unnecessary biological, psychological, social, and emotional trauma associated with barrenness, to the couple.
Once this is done, and problem detected, such couple can start the treat early enough, because, some couples wish to start having children, immediately they got married.
HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) tests
HIV, hepatitis, B, and C are conditions that last lifelong and, if not properly managed, it can strain the marriage.
The knowledge of one’s partner health status helps to protect oneself and to seek adequate medical care if a partner test result turns out to be positive.
The other partner will then decide whether to go ahead with the marriage or not.
Couples who got married without the test, usually resulted in both couple having the desease.
Rhesus disease.
It is a condition where antibodies in a pregnant woman’s blood destroy her baby’s blood cells.
If a women with rhesus negative blood group married to positive rhesus husbands, they have a higher chance of rhesus.
Incompatibility where the growing fetus takes after the father in blood group causing this problem and leading to intrauterine death and miscarriages.
Coronavirus disease (COVID-19)
Due to the new outbreak of the pandemic, wedding parties of all kinds have been put on hold or prescribed number of guests, to the marriage in order to contain the spread of the virus.
It is the invisible enemy that is ravaging and decimating the global population with no end in sight.
This virus, not only infects the couple, when one of them has it, but any body who comes around them, if safety measures are not observed.
The Federal Government has issued directives aimed at mitigating the effect of the deadly virus such as lockdown, wearing of face mask, and use of sanitizer.
According to reports, most people infected with the COVID-19 virus will experience mild to moderate respiratory illness and recover without requiring special treatment.
Older people and those with underlying medical problems such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic respiratory disease, and cancer, are more likely to develop serious illnesses.
The COVID-19 virus spreads primarily through droplets of saliva or discharge from the nose when an infected person coughs or sneezes, so it is crucial that you also practice respiratory etiquette (for example, by coughing into a flexed elbow).
As of now, there are no specific vaccines or treatments for COVID-19. Researches are ongoing to ensure vaccine for the treatment of the virus, is discovered in the near future.
Although, ongoing clinical trials are evaluating potential treatments. World Health Organisation, WHO, says it will continue to provide updated information as soon as clinical findings become available.
It advantageous for persons intending to get married, to undergo these tests to achieve a healthy family.
