NELFUND Explains Why South-East Students Missed Out On Federal Loan

Former lawmaker Hon. Lanre Laoshe repaid his N1,200 student loan from 1976-1979 with N3.2 million, 45 years after graduation.

The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has clarified why students from South-East institutions have not yet benefited from the federal government’s student loan program. On Friday, NELFUND reported the disbursement of ₦2.95 billion to 27,667 students across 19 universities nationwide.

However, none of the federal institutions in the South-East were included on the list of beneficiaries, sparking criticism from the region’s residents on social media.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that in response, NELFUND explained that no federal institutions in the South-East complied with the required directives for students to access the loan. The organization emphasized that geopolitical factors did not influence the disbursement process.

NELFUND urged stakeholders in the South-East to collaborate with their institutions’ authorities to complete the necessary verification process, enabling their students to benefit from the loan program.

The statement read: “Geopolitical zones are not a consideration in the loan disbursement process. We sent a verification list to all eligible institutions, and payments are being made to those that have responded.

“Unfortunately, we have not received any response from South-East institutions. We encourage them to complete the verification so their students can access the loan.”
