In a statement issued by the NEMA Press Unit on Sunday and shared on the agency’s X account, NEMA clarified the situation, stating, “This is to clarify that the looted warehouse does not belong to NEMA. However, the Agency sympathises with the owners of the looted facility.”
To prevent any potential security breaches, NEMA’s Director General, Mustapha Habib Ahmed, has directed Zonal Directors and Heads of Operations to strengthen security measures in and around the agency’s offices and warehouses nationwide.
“To forestall any security breach at NEMA facilities, the Director General Mustapha Habib Ahmed has directed Zonal Directors and Heads of Operations to strengthen security in and around the Agency’s offices and warehouses nationwide,” the statement read.
Meanwhile, the Agricultural and Rural Development Secretariat of the Federal Capital Territory Administration confirmed the looting of its warehouse in Dei-Dei on Sunday by residents of the FCT, citing economic hardship as the reason behind the incident.
Zakari Aliyu, the Spokesperson for the ARD Secretariat, confirmed the incident to our correspondent, stating, “We visited the scene of the incident this morning. We visited with the secretary and some other officials of the secretariat. So, by tomorrow, the Secretary, I think, with the Minister of State, will pay another visit to that place.”
Aliyu provided further details, saying, “If you go there, there is nothing there. If you know that place, do you know that they removed the roof, and the windows, inclusive, apart from the food items?”
The FCT Minister of State, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, and the FCT Mandate Secretary, Agric Secretariat, Lawan Geidam, are expected to visit the looted facility on Monday, where more detailed information regarding the incident will be provided.
The incident highlights the growing concerns over economic hardship in the country and the potential for civil unrest if the situation remains unaddressed.
