However, Nigerians have begun calling for the immediate release of the former Presidential Candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) and all other protesters, describing the arrest as an abuse on human rights.
The #FreeSowore campaign has generated over 10,000 tweets as at 12pm on Friday. Read some of the reactions culled from twitter:
We call on @MBuhari to stop using the @PoliceNG to intimidate & arrest citizens expressing their fundamental human rights. We immediately demand the release of our national chairman @YeleSowore and other comrades arrested over #CrossoverWithProtest unconditionally. #FreeSowore

I woke up to the news of the arrest of Sowore.
Thumps up for @MBuhari for giving us the signal early enough that tyranny would be unleashed fully in 2021.
Happy New Year

37yrs ago today January 1st 1984, my dad, Bianca Ojukwu’s dad late Gov Onoh arrested by @MBuhari, thrown into a crowded cell with several governors to sleep on the floor at Panti, even arrested Shagari to probe them after his coup. Today history repeated😡👎🏽

If Nigeria govt have not arrested these enemies of Nigeria, it is injustice and tyrannical to arrest Sowore for holding a peaceful protest in a supposed country practicing democracy.#FreeSowore #FreeSowore #FreeSowore #FreeSowore pic.twitter.com/fQKCg7CwmX

My heart breaks that #FreeSowore is the first tweet I'll be doing in the year 2021. The level of lawlessness, impunity and crass tyranny in Nigeria is disturbing and worrisome.
