Eko Hot Blog reports that AMBSAM Memorial Foundation has remembered the seven fallen heroes who lost their lives to a a boat mishap in Epe, Lagos State, on March 28, 2015.
AMBSAM is an acronym for Adewale Olakunle; Mogaji Omogbolahan; Bello Muheez; Salau Tunde; Agoro Shamuseen; Mogaji Wale and Muftau Penu, who were the victims of the unfortunate incident.
The victims met their tragic death while on an assignment to monitor the 2015 presidential and national assembly elections.
In an advertorial released on Sunday, March 26, 2023, eight years after the deadly accident, the coordinator of AMBSAM Memorial Foundation, Otunba T.J. Abass, wrote a glowing tribute to the fallen heroes who he said will “never be forgotten.”
He described them as “ballast” and “freedom soldiers” who heroically defended democracy when they were called upon.
While acknowledging the weight of the loss on the loved ones of the victims, Otunba Abass promised that their memories will be kept alive for generations to come.
“Heroes are ordinary individuals committed to making the world a better place by doing extraordinary things, even if it means putting their lives on the line,” the foundation’s coordinator wrote.
“This sentiment echoes the sacrifice made by those who paid the ultimate price for democracy eight years ago when tragedy struck. They lost their lives while monitoring the presidential election in a boat accident. They were the brave and ballast soldiers, the defenders of democracy, and the freedom soldiers.
“Yes, it’s been a near-decade, an octet of sunsets, since fate snatched them away prematurely while courageously discharging their duties. Eight orbits around the sun have passed since the whole Epe tapestry was draped in a cloak of sorrow.
“For eight lengthy years, the weight of the ultimate sacrifice has hung heavy upon us all, including members of the AMBSAM Memorial Foundation. In that time, the heartbeats of families have faltered, yearning for the love of their lost providers, and venerable parents have shouldered the unbearable burden of laying their offspring to rest.
“As a testament to their profound impact, we have banded as a community to create the AMBSAM Memorial Foundation.
“This tribute ensures their memories are kept alive for generation to come. Their contributions to our world will never be forgotten, and this foundation stands as a proof of that enduring legacy.
“Though they have all departed from this world, the impact they all made during their time here continues to resonate deeply. We cherish the memories of the moments we shared on the road of life and hold them close to our hearts.
“You are all gone but not forgotten. Rest in peace. From all of us at AMBSAM Memorial Foundation.”
AMBSAM Memorial Foundation was created in 2016 to help the loved ones of the victims and make meaningful contributions to society.
Apart from donating N3.5 million to the bereaved families, the foundation has embarked on multiple live-saving initiatives, including training 5,000 Epe indigenes on Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) to give victims first aid before proper medical attention.
