Tragedy struck during a New Year’s Mass at St. Columbus Catholic Church, Amaimo, Ikeduru Local Government Area of Imo State, as a Catholic priest allegedly shot and killed a boy after he set off fireworks during the service.
The incident occurred on January 1, 2025, leaving the local community in shock and mourning. Eyewitness accounts suggest the tragedy unfolded when the boy, whose name remains undisclosed, ignited a firework, commonly known as a “knockout,” within the church premises. Reports vary, with some claiming the priest acted in self-defense, while others allege it was an accidental discharge.

Public Relations Officer, Henry Okoye, stated, “A detailed investigation has been initiated to ascertain the remote facts surrounding the incident.
