Tragedy struck during a New Year’s Mass at St. Columbus Catholic Church, Amaimo, Ikeduru Local Government Area of Imo State, as a Catholic priest allegedly shot and killed a boy after he set off fireworks during the service.
The incident occurred on January 1, 2025, leaving the local community in shock and mourning. Eyewitness accounts suggest the tragedy unfolded when the boy, whose name remains undisclosed, ignited a firework, commonly known as a “knockout,” within the church premises. Reports vary, with some claiming the priest acted in self-defense, while others allege it was an accidental discharge.
The Amaimo community has been thrown into mourning, with residents demanding justice and clarity about the circumstances of the shooting. “The tragic loss is painful to us all,” said one resident, who preferred to remain anonymous.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage and debate on social media. While some users condemned the priest’s actions outright, others called for a thorough investigation to uncover the facts. One user wrote, “Let there be proper and comprehensive investigation. This should not be swept under the carpet.”
Others pointed to the rising insecurity in the region as a potential factor, with some justifying the priest’s actions as a precautionary measure. “Reverend fathers are being murdered every day in the east. They can’t be too careful,” commented another user.
The Imo State Police Command has confirmed the incident and announced that an investigation is underway. Public Relations Officer, Henry Okoye, stated, “A detailed investigation has been initiated to ascertain the remote facts surrounding the incident. Further developments will be communicated in due course.”
As the investigation continues, questions remain about how the priest came to possess a firearm and whether the shooting could have been avoided. Meanwhile, the Catholic leadership of the community has yet to issue a formal statement on the matter.
The tragic event underscores the dangers of unchecked use of fireworks and raises concerns about firearm regulation and safety within places of worship.
