New York City has officially implemented the first congestion charge scheme in the U.S., targeting vehicles entering a designated area in the city.
Eko Hot Blog reports that drivers will pay up to $9 (£7) per day, with varied rates for other vehicles. The system, which went live at midnight on Sunday, is monitored by over 1,400 cameras, 110 detection points, and 800 signs, covering 400 traffic lanes.

The charge zone encompasses a stretch of the city south of Central Park, including iconic locations such as the Empire State Building, Times Square, and the financial district around Wall Street.
The goal is to alleviate New York’s severe traffic congestion while generating funds for the public transport system.
Governor Kathy Hochul first proposed the idea two years ago, but the plan faced delays and revisions due to opposition from commuters and businesses. The new plan reintroduces a scheme that was previously put on hold in June.
Most drivers will pay $9 during peak hours and $2.25 at other times. Larger vehicles such as trucks and tourist buses will face higher fees, with peak-time charges reaching $21.60.
Despite the system’s launch, opposition continues, including from President-elect Donald Trump, who has vowed to dismantle the scheme upon taking office. Local Republicans have also called for intervention.
The congestion charge is part of efforts to address the city’s ongoing traffic issues, with New York having earned the title of the world’s most congested urban area last year.
