Oyekan was remanded after he failed to meet his bail requirements. The court adjourned further hearing on the case till April 26.
The Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Godswill Akpabio, Thursday in Abuja said he was not in the presidential race ahead of the 2023 elections.
Akpabio said he was engrossed with his portfolio to assist the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), to complete his assignment in 2023.
He disclosed this to journalists in Abuja shortly after a meeting with the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, at the party’s Buhari House national secretariat.
The former governor of Akwa Ibom State, who said he was not eyeing the APC presidential ticket, said asides from his ministerial assignment, he was working for the development of the Niger Delta region and nurturing the APC chapter there to ensure a harmonious relationship among stakeholders.
Russia’s guided missile cruiser Moskva has sunk in the Black Sea after being damaged during the military operation in Ukraine, Russia’s defence ministry said late Thursday.
“While being towed … towards the destined port, the vessel lost its balance due to damage sustained in the hull as fire broke out after ammunition exploded. Given the choppy seas, the vessel sank,” the state news agency TASS quoted the ministry as saying.
The Federal Government has asked the Academic Staff Union of Universities to suspend its ongoing strike.
Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige made this appeal on Thursday in Abuja.
This is as the minister also faulted the Nigeria Labour Congress’ ultimatum for ending the strike.
The NLC had called on the Federal Government to set up a High-Powered Panel to deal with industrial disharmony in Nigeria’s university system.
THE Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, in Kaduna State has said that it is a complete disservice for government to abandon citizens in pain without showing genuine concern. Chairman, CAN, Kaduna State, Rev John Joseph Hayab, said in a statement that Jesus in the last days and hours of his agony made many spiritual revelations about life and how to address human, spiritual and physical needs. He said: “Jesus on the cross shared in human pains by saying ‘I am thirsty’. Indeed, Nigerians, nowadays, can say, like Jesus on the cross of cavalry, that they are thirsty.
“They are thirsty due to poor economy, thirsty due to bad governance, and thirsty because of insecurity. All the thirst experiences could lead to misery. Accordingly, celebrating Jesus’ victory at Easter with a dry throat, dry stomach and dry lifestyle is because of the failure of the successive administrations as well as the existing one.
“So, what is basic is that government needs to provide cold water to quench the thirst of Nigerians. People have been crying out loud, like Jesus on the cross, that they were thirsty, but, sadly, the leaders do not appear to care. However, there is a lesson that I wish Nigerian leaders could learn from the soldiers that policed Jesus on the cross. When the Lord cried out of thirst, they provided vinegar for succor. Therefore, it is a complete disservice for the government to abandon citizens in pain without showing genuine concern. Hence, CAN appeals to the Nigerian governments, at the local, state and federal levels, to take concrete steps toward providing palliatives that could quench the thirst of Nigerians.”
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has denied reports that Eberechukwu, wife of the immediate past governor of Anambra State, Willie Obiano, was in its custody.
Online media (not Vanguard) had reported the arrest and detention of the former first lady of Anambra state.
The online media said she was arrested over alleged fraud.
However, when Vanguard contacted Wilson Uwujaren, EFCC’s spokesman, he denied the report, saying that she is not in EFCC’s custody.
The themes of social justice and gender inclusion dominated discussions at the premiere of ‘Earth Women’, a poignant documentary that explores the plight of women living in areas impacted by extractive activities, including oil and gas exploration and mining. Earth Women is an initiative of CSR-in-Action Advocacy, the development-focused arm of the CSR-in-Action Group and primarily funded by Ford Foundation.
Earth Women was Produced by CSR-in-Action’s Chief Executive, Bekeme Olowola, energy expert, Meka Olowola, and veteran thespian, Ego Boyo. According to Bekeme Olowola, who visualised the concept for the documentary, “when disasters occur due to the adverse effects of extractive operations, women suffer immensely because their sources of livelihood are threatened, and they often do not have control over what happens to them in such situations. But we want to use these powerful visuals to change that narrative.” “This documentary is driven by our deep understanding of the multi-layered challenges in the extractive industries. For the past ten years, we have worked on a viable platform for resolving these socio-political issues by bringing together key stakeholders in government, business and the host communities,” Masade-Olowola said.
THE President of the Senate, Senator Ahmad Lawan has asked security agencies, especially the Inspector- General of Police, IGP, Usman Baba to carry out a holistic investigation into the death of the gospel Singer, Osinachi Nwachukwu, to unravel the remote and immediate cause of her death.
Meanwhile, the Senate Thursday observed a Minute silence in her honour. According to Lawan, the probe has become very imperative against the backdrop that life was involved and lives of citizens of a country is paramount.
Speaking in Abuja while commenting on a point of Order raised by Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, YPP, Anambra South, the President of the Senate said that Osinachi’s death is “one too many.”
The Federal Government yesterday blamed the current crisis in the nation’s power sector on acts of sabotage perpetrated by some Nigerians.
Power Minister Abubakar Aliyu said this while addressing State House correspondents after the week’s virtual Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
The minister said recent incidents, including fatal attacks and abduction of foreign workers working on various power projects, had stalled work towards the completion of some projects, while other attacks on installations had led to blackouts.
The Federal Government, through the Federal Executive Council (FEC), approved the establishment of 12 new private universities across the country on April 6, 2022
Minister of Information and Culture Alhaji Lai Mohammed made this known last week in Abuja.
He listed the benefitting states to include Kano, Niger, Gombe, Sokoto, Delta, Abia, Anambra and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
However, there are concerns on whether it is a good move by the Federal Government since the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has been on strike since February 14.
The Niger State Government is indebted to the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) to the tune of N295 million in unpaid fees for the 2021 WAEC examinations, The Nation learnt.
This has made students of public secondary schools who wrote the 2021 WAEC to be unable to access their results to enable them to seek admission into universities.
The Nation learnt that WAEC withheld the results of students whose parents paid the fees and those whose fees were said to have been paid by the government.
The Niger State Government has the policy to pay the examination fees of students who passed the mock examinations while students who did not pass would have their fees paid by their parents.
Ricardo Pereira scored a late winner as Leicester City produced a superb comeback to beat PSV Eindhoven in the Europa Conference League and reach the club’s first European semi-final.
After a goalless first leg at King Power Stadium, Eran Zahavi pounced on a mistake by Youri Tielemans to open the scoring but James Maddison levelled with 13 minutes remaining.
The Foxes midfielder slotted into the top corner from Ayoze Perez’s clever cutback before Pereira fired the winner in the 88th minute to seal a memorable win.
One week after a marathon meeting with leaders of Nigeria’s security team, the House of Representatives, yesterday, lamented rising insecurity in several parts of the country, especially Kaduna, Benue, Taraba and Plateau states.
The lawmakers took turns to criticise the action and inaction of President Muhammadu Buhari, restating their earlier call for a declaration of emergency on security.
While some called for the sacking or resignation of the National Security Adviser, Maj. Gen. Babagana Monguno (retd.) and the Minister of Defence, Maj. Gen. Bashir Magashi (rtd.), others called for the shutdown of the National Assembly, partly blaming the parliament for not doing enough in its oversight of the executive arm.
This is coming a day after the Northern Elders Forum demanded the immediate resignation of President Buhari over killings across the country.
There were strong indications yesterday that the United States may have dropped ‘all charges’ against Nigerian sprinter, Blessing Okagbare, who is serving a 10-year ban over drugs offences.
Okagbare was provisionally suspended for testing positive for human growth hormone in July 2021, just hours before her 100m semifinals at Tokyo Olympics. She was later handed a 10-year ban by the world anti-doping agency (WADA).
Before then, Okagbare was under investigation by an American agency for some other misdemeanours. The U.S. Federal authorities had searched Okagbare’s cellphone on her return to the country from the Tokyo Olympics and found she had frequently communicated with Eric Lira, a kinesiologist and naturopathic doctor, who was said to have brought ‘misbranded’ versions of the drugs to the U.S. from Central and South America before distributing them to athletes.
But a source close to World Athletics told The Guardian yesterday that the U.S. has dropped ‘all charges’ against Okagbare.
All Progressives Congress (APC) Chairman, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, yesterday, urged Senate Minority Leader, Enyinnaya Abaribe, to leave the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to actualise his political ambition.
Abaribe, who is eying the PDP governorship ticket in Abia State, had been caught in the web of a zoning formula, which favours Abia Central and Abia North senatorial districts, given that his Abia South district had already taken its turn.
The event was a valedictory session to mark the exit of Adamu; Deputy National Chairman (North), Abubakar Kyari; and Deputy Governor of Zamfara State, Hassan Muhammad Nasiha.
Capitalising on Abaribe’s governorship ambition, Adamu said: “Some of you are the best materials this country can have but you are in the wrong camp. It is in my heart of hearts…those of you who are willing to reach out to a higher pedestal, our hands are open and we are stretching the hands to you.
Intending railway passengers should get their National Identity Number (NIN) ready as it will be a requirement from May.
Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), Mr Fidet Okhiria, stated in Abuja on Thursday that the NIN would be needed to enhance the profiling of passengers.
This, he explained, would also enhance the safety and security of rail users.
“The process of linking passengers to their NIN for improved profiling is on-going. This layer of passenger screening will commence by May.
“The Abuja-Kaduna Train Service (AKTS) will resume as soon as possible with additional security measures put in place,’’ Okhiria stated.
The NRC suspended the Abuja-Kaduna route following a March 28 attack by assailants, who injured passengers and kidnapped some.
