1. NSCDC begins training for Gombe recruits
No fewer than 100 newly recruited officers into the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Gombe State command commenced training on Thursday.
Our correspondent gathered that the recruits were expected to support the command in serving the needs of residents after their three-month training.
According to the Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSC Buhari Saad, the commandant has tasked the recruits on discipline and dedication.
He disclosed that the newly recruited officers have been enjoined to uphold the trust reposed in them, adding that they have been asked to discharge their service without fear or favour.
2. Kaduna govt reintroduces monthly sanitation, plans plastic container ban
The Kaduna State Government has disclosed plans to bring back monthly sanitation exercises in line with its commitment to keep the state clean and safer.
It also said plans are in top gear to introduce electric tricycles to the Kaduna metropolis and ban plastic containers to reduce environmental pollution and flood.
The Administrator, Kaduna Capital Territory, Hazif Bayero, revealed this at a media briefing held at the Sir Kashim Ibrahim Government House in the state capital on Thursday.
He noted that apart from bringing back the monthly sanitation exercise, the state government was set to dredge the River Kaduna in order to stem floods and easy flow of water as the rainy season approaches.
3. US announces no-interview visa renewals for Nigerian students
The United States Embassy & Consulate in Nigeria has announced no-interview visa renewals for Nigerian students seeking to continue their studies in the US.
This is contained in a statement issued on the the embassy’s website on Thursday.
The statement read in part, “If you are currently studying in the United States, you may be eligible to renew your student visa without an interview when you return to Nigeria this summer.
“To qualify for this procedure, you must be physically in Nigeria renewing a student visa that is still valid or has expired within the past 24 months and are renewing your visa either to: (a) continue participation in the same major course of study even if at a different institution; or (b) attend the same institution even if in a different major course of study.”
4. 2023: My ambition driven by younger generation’s interest, says Obi
Former governor of Anambra State and presidential aspirant under the Peoples Democratic Party, Peter Obi, has revealed that his presidential ambition is borne out of his interest in the younger generation of Nigerians and those yet unborn.
This, he said, propelled him to present himself for the task of leading the country by ensuring the current economic situation of the country, which holds no future for its children and generations yet unborn, is salvaged.
Obi stated these when he met with the delegates at the party’s State Secretariat in Umuahia, the Abia State capital on Thursday.

5. Oyetola tasks Igbo community on peaceful coexistence
Governor Gboyega Oyeola of Osun State, on Thursday, urged members of the Igbo community living in the state to continue to embrace peaceful coexistence with the host communities.
Oyetola said this during an engagement meeting with the newly elected executives of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Osun chapter in Osogbo.
The governor was represented at the occasion by his Special Adviser on Civic Engagement, Mr Olatunbosun Oyintiloye.
6. Taraba Blast: Ishaku condemns attack, calls for vigilance
Taraba State Governor, Darius Ishaku, Thursday condemned in strong terms the recent bomb attack at a local bar in Iware, Ardo Kola Local Government Area of the state.
He said the loss of lives, injuries and attendant destruction that was caused by the explosion is wicked and inhumane.
He described the attack as unprovoked aggression against innocent people.
Ishaku while expressing sympathy with families of the victims, urged security agencies to go after the perpetrators of the crime.
7. Govt that can’t protect lives, properties is a failure — Wike
Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers state has said any government that cannot secure the lives and properties of its Citizenry has failed in its responsibility and has no business with governance.
He spoke Thursday at the government house in Jalingo, Taraba state capital during an interface with delegates and People’s Democratic Party, PDP, stakeholders
He noted that if he was President Muhammadu Buhari, he would have resigned for failing to tackle the security challenges plaguing the country.
8. Why we can’t adopt freely floating FX regime – Emefiele
The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Mr. Godwin Emefiele, has explained why Nigeria cannot freely float the Naira at the foreign exchange market.
He said in an interview, Thursday, on the sidelines of the on-going IMF/World Bank Spring Meetings in Washington DC, United States of America, that such a policy would lead to foreign exchange spiral for Nigerians.
His words, “What that means is that we cannot adopt a free floating system. Doing that will create an exchange rate spiral for Nigerians as long as the demand surpasses supply of FX in Nigeria.

9. Buhari meets Service Chiefs, Ministers
President Muhammadu Buhari is presiding over a meeting with some Ministers and Heads of security establishments at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
The meeting, which started at 10am, is sequel to the recommendations by the Council of State over insecurity across the nation.
Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo; Secretary to the Government of the Federation; Boss Mustapha; Chief of Staff to the President, Professor Ibrahim Gambari; and the National Security Adviser (NSA), Maj. Gen. Babagana Monguno (rtd.) are attending the meeting.
10. One killed, others injured in Osun clash
One person was killed in Ede community when factional hoodlums clashed with some Hausa residents.
The clash led to the death of someone identified as Rasheed Olopa while others sustained various degrees of injuries.
The Nation gathered a group of hoodlums led by suspected assistant of a notorious land grabber had been terrorising the Sabo community of Ede.
But the head of the Hausa community, Gambo Ibrahim, was said to have reported the group to their leader, alleging his people were being robbed, extorted and harassed.
11. 2023: Only PDP can fix Nigeria, says Ayu
There is no need for ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to field a candidate for next year’s presidential election, National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Dr. Iyorchia Ayu, said yesterday.
Ayu, who said only the PDP can fix the country and save Nigeria, lamented what he described as the socio-economic dislocation and rising insecurity since the APC took the baton more than seven years ago.
The party chair spoke at the PDP national secretariat during an interactive session with one of the presidential aspirant of the party Akwa Ibom State Governor, Udom Emmanuel.
Ayu said: “The six to seven years that the PDP has been out of power, you have seen what the other party has turned Nigeria into.”
12. Lagos diverts traffic at Ikeja rail level crossing
Lagos State Government will from 9pm on Thursday April 21 divert traffic flow on the Public Works Road, Ikeja, for asphalt laying on the Rail Level Crossing, the Commissioner for Transportation, Dr. Frederic Oladeinde has said.
The asphalt laying will end by 6am on Friday, April 22.
The Commissioner, who made this known in a statement, said the asphalting of the level crossing, was necessary to ease traffic flow across the rail track in the Ikeja section.

13. Absence Of Minister, NNPC GMD Stalls Reps’ Probe On Multi-Million Dollars Spent On Refineries In 10 Years
Ongoing investigative hearing into the contracts awarded for the rehabilitation of the four refineries over the past 10 years, on Thursday, was stalled sequel to the absence of the Minister of Petroleum Resources, Timipre Sylva and the Group Managing Director of Nigerian National Petroleum Resources (NNPC) Limited, Mele Kyari.
The Committee also queried NNPC over the full payment of $3.7 billion to the contractors without commensurate results.
According to the lawmakers, NNPC awarded Port Harcourt Refining Company (PHRC) the sum of $1.5 billion; Warri Refining and Petrochemical Company Limited (WRPC) awarded the sum of $900 million; while Kaduna Refining and Petrochemical Company Limited (KRPC)) was awarded at $1.3 billion.
In the bid to ensure accountability of public funds spent so far on the rehabilitation of the four refineries without commensurate results, the Committee specifically requested for: Appraisal of the current state of refineries in the Country: Port Harcourt Refining Company (PHRC); Warri Refining and Petrochemical Company Limited (WRPC) and Kaduna Refining and Petrochemical Company Limited (KRPC) from the year 2012 to date; copies of annual budgets on rehabilitation by the refineries.
14. Abort MoU Handing Over GCI To Old Students, JAF, PTA, Community Leaders Tell Oyo Govt
The Joint Action Front (JAF), the Oyo State chapter has called for the abortion of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the Oyo State government and the Government College Ibadan Old Boys Association (GCIOBA) for the takeover of the school.
Secretary, JAF, Oyo State, Abiodun Bamigboye, alongside some Chairmen of the Parents Teachers Association (PTA) of the school, community leaders and heads of affiliate unions, made this call while addressing a press conference, in Ibadan, on Thursday.
Reading the JAF address, Bamigboye said the union feared that the GCIOBA has an agenda to privatise and commercialise education in Oyo State.
JAF held that schools may be returned to missionaries who began the schools but described as a misnomer handing over school to old students’ association, who were not original owners.
Pointing to the fact that the government took over schools from the missionaries so as to implement free education, the group questioned the capability of the GCIOBA to provide true free education.
15. GAC Endorsement: Sanwo-Olu To Focus On Projects ― Omotoso
Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr Gbenga Omotoso, on Thursday, said Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu will focus on more projects, and will not shift his attention away from the State’s numerous ongoing projects.
It would be recalled that the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), the highest decision-making body of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos, during the week endorsed Sanwo-Olu for re-election.
Omotoso stated this while speaking on “Lagos State In Focus,” an MITV programme, noting that the endorsement was based on Governor Sanwo-Olu’s remarkable achievements in projects execution, even as he added that such gesture was not unexpected, because, according to him, Sanwo-Olu had done well in the state.

Convener of Lagos4Lagos and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship aspirant in Lagos State for the 2023 General Elections, Dr Abdul Azeez Olajide Adediran popularly known as Jandor, on Thursday predicted an implosion in All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, ahead of the poll exercise, saying aggrieved chieftains and members of the ruling party would flock in droves to the opposition PDP following the endorsement of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for the second term in office.
Sanwo-Olu during the week was endorsed for a second term of office by the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC), the Apex decision making body of the ruling APC, at its meeting which took place at the Government House in Marina and attended by the governor himself
Jandor, who recently dumped APC for PDP, following irreconcilable differences, said this while playing host to a group within the main opposition party, Reset Lagos PDP headed by Dr Tokunbo Pearse, who came to his Ikeja office to endorse him as the party’s candidate for the forthcoming governorship poll.
The governorship hopeful, who described PDP as a democratic party compared to the ruling APC, maintaining that he was in the fold to win the governorship race, posited that he was in the know that the endorsement of Governor Sanwo-Olu for a second term was already creating tension, with some aggrieved chieftain and members, including some sitting members of Lagos State House Assembly getting set to cross over to PDP.
