1. Reps approve FMC establishment in Lagos community

The House of Representatives has passed for second reading, the Federal Medical Centre, Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos State (Establishment, Etc.) Bill 2022.

The lawmaker representing Ibeju-Lekki Federal Constituency in Lagos State at the House, Adebayo Balogun, while leading the debate on the bill, noted that Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Area is the largest LGA in Lagos in terms of landmass, which covers 646km2, excluding water.

Balogun also claimed that the LGA currently has the “fastest population growth in Nigeria.”

2. Ukraine: Latest developments as EU, G7 hit Russia with new sanctions

As the Russia-Ukrainian war continues unabated with the fallout in talks between both countries, the European Union and G7 nations have imposed new sanctions on Russia, with Moscow facing criticism from several nations and global bodies.

– New EU, G7 sanctions –

The European Union approves an embargo on Russian coal — the first time the bloc has targeted the energy sector, on which they are heavily dependent — and the closing of its ports to Russian vessels.

Earlier, leaders of the G7 biggest economies agree to ban “new investments in key sectors of the Russian economy, including the energy sector”, alongside widening export bans on certain goods and tightening the screws on Russian banks and state-owned companies.

3. Police nab five traffic robbers in Lagos

The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of no fewer than five suspected traffic robbers terrorising the Ladipo and Oshodi areas of the state.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, in a statement on Thursday, said a Beretta pistol and four rounds of ammunition were recovered from the suspects.

He said, “Operatives of the Rapid Response Squad, on April 5, 2022 arrested three robbery suspects and recovered a beretta pistol and four rounds of ammunition at Toyota bus-stop near Oshodi, Lagos.

“The prompt arrest of the traffic robbers followed a tip-off from civic-minded Lagosians to the RRS officers who were on routine patrol along Ladipo and Oshodi. The arrested suspects, preliminary investigations revealed, are members of Aro–Baga cult group.

4. Court strikes out Kyari’s suit against NDLEA

A Federal High Court in Abuja, on Thursday, dismissed a fundamental enforcement rights suit filed by suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abba Kyari, against the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency.

Justice Inyang Ekwo dismissed the suit after counsel for the NDLEA, Joseph Sunday, prayed the court that the matter be struck out.

When the matter was called, Cynthia Ikena, lawyer to Kyari, was absent.

Sunday, NDLEA’s Director of Prosecution and Legal Services, urged the court to strike out the suit.

5. Ghana, other African countries lobbying companies to leave Nigeria —Adebayo, Industry Minister

The Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Niyi Adebayo, revealed yesterday that many African countries were lobbying companies operating in Nigeria to leave and come to them.

Appearing before the House of Representatives Committee on Public Accounts, the minister, who led other agencies under the Ministry to the committee to respond to queries from the Auditor General for the Federation, said one of such countries was Ghana.

He said those countries had raised the capital allowances of the companies, stressing that those  still left behind were attracted by Nigeria’s huge population.

6. Be fair, firm, Buhari tells new APC Chairman

PRESIDENT  Muhammadu Buhari, yesterday received the newly-elected chairman of All Progressives Congress, APC, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, urging him to be fair and firm as ‘he is known to be’, in all his dealings.

This is even as Senator Adamu said one of the reasons that brought him to the Presidential Villa was to inform the President that he had been handed over the leadership of the APC and is now fully in charge.

9. Attacked train: Families of abducted passengers protest

An expectant mother and her husband, a couple and two sisters are among those being held by terrorists who attacked an Abuja-Kaduna train, it was learnt yesterday.

Aliyu Mahmud, a relative of the seven-month pregnant woman, was among the victims’ families who staged a peaceful protest at the Radio House in Abuja yesterday.

The protesters, who bore placards, spoke with reporters.

Terrorists on March 28 blew up rail tracks on the Abuja-Kaduna route, killing eight passengers.

10. 2023: APC remains Nigerians’ party of choice, says Buhari

To President Muhammadu Buhari, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) remains the party of choice for Nigerians in future elections.

He expressed the confidence that Nigerians will vote the APC considering the feat attained by his administration in critical areas.

The President, who spoke when he received the the APC National Chairman, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, said the party has overcome the internal crises that preceded its convention.

11. I’m waiting for anyone to sue over Omisore, says Soyinka

Nobel laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, has insisted that the National Secretary of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Otunba Iyiola Omisore, is not fit for the position for disgracing former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, the late Chief Bola Ige.

Soyinka spoke at a media parley with the theme: Forget the Past, Forfeit the Future: A Nation Seceding from Humanity, yesterday in Lagos.

The literary icon said he was ready for anyone who might want to challenge him on his position concerning Omisore.

12. Disquiet in Oyo PDP over tickets for aspirants

There is disquiet in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo State, as leaders and aspirants for National  and State Assembly tickets have had their hopes dashed by Governor Seyi Makinde’s decision to return most serving legislators.

For over three months now, aspirants for the three senatorial seats, 17 House of Representatives seats and the 32 seats in the House of Assembly have been mounting pressure on party leaders and Governor Makinde for the tickets

The governor has adopted consensus model for its primary, but with a caveat that an elective primary will hold in a few constituencies where stakeholders fail to agree on consensus candidates.

13. Amid crude theft, vandalisation, FG earns $4.48b from Shell

Notwithstanding the challenges of crude theft and pipeline vandalisation, the Federal Government, last year, earned $4.48 billion from Shell companies in Nigeria in royalties, taxes and other payments.

The company, in its report on payments to governments, yesterday, unveiled the amount paid to different governments where it operates.

The country’s crude production has recorded sub-optimal performance last year, owing to theft and asset vandalism despite improved quota allocation from the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).

14. Lagos moves to relocate traders affected by Apongbon bridge fire

Efforts are on by the Lagos Island Local Council in collaboration with the state government to relocate traders affected by the Apongbon fire incident.

The Council boss, Hon. (Prince) Tijani Adetoyese Olusi, disclosed this while giving an update on efforts to return normalcy to the area and ensure that affected residents have their means of livelihood back.

Adetoyese Olusi stressed that the move was in partnership with the Federal and State Governments.

He said: “We are working round the clock to see that our people, affected by the unfortunate fire incident, have their lives back.

15. Osinbajo to disclose intention ‘in a matter of days

Barring any last-minute change, the Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, will ‘in a matter of days’ disclose his position on the 2023 presidential election.

A top presidency source told The Guardian last night that Osinbajo feels it’s the right time to address the 2023 issue with regard to his ambition, considering the fact that the election is close.

“I can now tell you not just soon, but in a matter of days. It will be a significant address.

“Things are still in flux so won’t say definitely the number of days, but this is no longer something that will go past a few days for sure. For instance, expectations were that this week, the party will announce the calendar but that has not happened,” the source said.

  1. Gombe cleaners barricade government house over unlawful sack

No fewer than 2,000 street cleaners engaged by Gombe State Government, yesterday, barricaded the entrance to the State House in protest against their “unlawful layoff.”

The protesters are staff of INEX cleaners, the contractor cleaning the state

Managing Director of INEX, Dr. Abubakar Ali Gombe, a former chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) recently decamped to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Consequently, the cleaning contract with the company was terminated, with many of the workers were thrown into the street.
