1. Another explosion hits Jalingo, scores injured

Scores of people, mostly women and children, are said to have been injured in an explosion in the Nukkai area of Jalingo, the Taraba State capital.

Local sources said the explosion happened at a bar behind the old Catholic Church in Nukkai at about 8:16 pm.

This is coming three days after a bomb blast killed six people and injured many according to security sources at Iware, a local market 22 kilometres away from Jalingo.

Police could not be reached for confirmation as at the time of filing this report.

2. Buhari gains nothing if Dariye, Nyame die in jail –Femi Adesina

Presidential spokesman, Femi Adesina, says his principal, the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), gains nothing if governors of Plateau State, Joshua Dariye; and Taraba State, Jolly Nyame, die in jail.

Adesina spoke on Friday on Channels Television’s ‘Politics Today’ programme monitored by The PUNCH.

According to him, the National Council of State endorsed the pardon of the former governors as well as 157 other convicts following the recommendation of the Presidential Advisory Committee on Prerogative of Mercy.

The presidential aide specifically said Nyame and Dariye were released on the grounds of health and age.

3. Obasanjo failed to restructure Nigeria, lacks right to demand state police – Presidency

The Presidency on Friday knocked former President Olusegun Obasanjo over his recent call for the restructuring of the country and the creation of state police to tackle the worsening security situation in Nigeria.

Presidential spokesman, Femi Adesina, said though Obasanjo had the opportunity to restructure Nigeria and create state police while in government for eight years, he failed to do so.

Adesina spoke on Channels Television’s ‘Politics Today’ programme monitored by The PUNCH.

Obasanjo, 85, was Nigeria’s democratically elected President between 1999 and 2007. He was previously Nigeria’s Military Head of State from February 1976 to October 1979.

4. Insecurity: We’ll ensure Lagos remains peaceful, says Sanwo-Olu

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on

Friday, said his administration would continue to work with security formations in the state for Lagos to remain the most peaceful, safe, secure and enterprising for the citizens and foreigners.

Sanwo-Olu gave the assurance  when the General Officer Commanding GOC), 81 Division of Nigerian Army, Major General Umar Musa; Air Officer Commanding (AOC) Logistics Command of the Nigerian Air Force, Air Vice Marshal Hassan Abubakar and the Commander, NNS Beecroft of Nigeria Navy, Commodore AM Haruna, led some military officers on a courtesy call to him at the Lagos House Marina, on Friday.

This was contained in a statement by Sanwo-Olu’s spokesman, Gboyega Akosile, titled, ‘We’ll continue to ensure Lagos remain most peaceful, secure state in Nigeria, Says Sanwo-Olu’.

He charged the military officers to sustain and improve the existing collaboration between the government and all the various security formations in the state.

5. Agents to shut down Lagos ports Monday over 15% levy

The Association of Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents (ANLCA) says they will embark on a one-day warning strike on April 25, over the introduction of 15 per cent National Automotive Council (NAC) levy.

Alhaji Rilwan Amuni, Taskforce Chairman of ANLCA, said this in a circular obtained by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Lagos.

The levy was recently introduced by the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) on used imported vehicles, a decision which didn’t go down well with clearing agents in the country’s maritime sector.

The agents argued that the NAC levy is mostly meant for new vehicles, questioning the rationale behind the introduction of the duty on used vehicles.

6. APC will win Rivers in 2023, declares Dakuku Peterside

The All Progressives Congress, APC, in Rivers State looks unstoppable in its goal of winning the presidential, governorship and all other elective positions in the state in 2023.

Chieftain and leading aspirant for the governorship ticket of the party, Dr. Dakuku Adol Peterside, made the declaration on Saturday, April 11, 2022, at the party’s Special Thanksgiving Service held at the 40-thousand capacity Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, Igwuruta, Port Harcourt, Rivers State capital,  to thank God for successful congresses and  national convention of the party at all levels.

Dakuku, who expressed delight that APC in Rivers State was on the right path of recovery and victory to end what he described as the “sad breast-pocket governance style  of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the state”, expressed delight at the mammoth crowd and success of the event.

7. 2023: I can defeat APC comfortably, support my Presidential ambition, Wike urges Ebonyi PDP delegates

A Presidential Aspirant on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP and the Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, Friday, called on delegates to support his Presidential ambition as he was prepared to defeat the All Progressives Congress, APC, in the 2023 general election.

He said he wants the party’s presidential primaries to be held before its intended date, so that he would claim victory without any delay.

The Governor who stated this while addressing party faithfuls at the State Party Secretariat, Abakaliki, noted that he wished the party’s leaders would review the date of the primaries backwards because he was getting impatient.

According to him, what should matter for the PDP is who will win the election and return it to power in 2023.

8. Dangote Refinery ‘ll be ready before end of Buhari’s tenure — Dangote

Chairman of the Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, on Friday, assured that the Dangote Refinery would be ready for commissioning before the end of the tenure of President Muhammadu Buhari in 2023.

Dangote disclosed this while speaking to State House correspondents on Friday after meeting behind closed-doors with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Asked when the refinery would be ready for operations, the Forbe’s Africa richest man said “by the grace of God, Mr. President will come and commission before the end of his tenure”.

He said when the refinery becomes operational, it would create jobs and generate more tax money, which would be used by government to develop the country further.

9. How prices of food increased in March – NBS

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has explained how the prices of food items rose in March 2022.

According to its document “Selected food price watch for the month of March 2022,” the average price of 1kg of beans (white, black eye, sold loose) increased on year-on-year basis by 46.64 percent from N345.03 in March 2021 to N505.94 in March 2022.

It noted on month-on-month basis, this increased by 1.69 percent from N497.54 in February 2022.

The document said the average price of Bread Sliced 500g increased on year-on-year basis by 34.98 percent from N331.76 in March 2021 to N447.80 in March 2022.

10.  2023: Osinbajo seeks Olubadàn’s blessings on presidential ambition

The Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, on Friday, visited the Olubadàn of Ibadanland, Oba Olalekan Balogun, at his Alarere residence, in Ibadan, to seek the traditional ruler’s blessings on his presidential ambition.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the visit was in continuation of the vice president’s visitation to states ahead of the primary election of his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), holding in May.

Osinbajo said that he came to pay homage and sought the traditional ruler’s blessings on his desire to take over from President Muhammadu Buhari in 2023, after the completion of the current tenure.

He explained that his decision to contest the post of presidency was made in  realisation of the need to put into use all the experiences he gained in the last seven years under the tutelage of President Buhari.

“During these years, our president truly gave me every opportunity to know all what the government was doing, including very sensitive issues and I felt it would be the right thing to do, to deploy all those experiences under me to the service of the country.

“Nigeria needs those who are willing to serve, to attain her potential. I have come to Ibadan to confer with the party delegates on my intention to run for the presidency, which I formally declared on April 11.

11. IGP to deploy special squads to tackle land grabbing in Edo – Obaseki

Gov. Godwin Obaseki of Edo says the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Usman Baba, will in the next few weeks deploy two police special squads to tackle land grabbing in the state.

Obaseki said this in Benin City on Friday, when he received the new Commissioner of Police, Mr Abutu Yaro, deployed to takeover from Mr Philip Ogbadu, who retired from the force.

He said that the issue of land grabbing in various communities in the state was worrisome and that the special squads being deployed by the IGP would assist in restoring sanity to the affected communities across the state.

12. Police foil suicide attempt in Ilorin

Police rescued a man attempting to commit suicide in Ilorin on Thursday, SP Ajayi Okasanmi, police spokesman said on Friday.

He said the man, Yinka Owolabi, attempted to hang himself from a tree around “Checking Point’’ bus stop in the Kwara capital

Okasanmi said upon interrogation after he regained consciousness, Owolabi said he was going to end it all as he had lost his job.

13. 2023: CSO Appeals For Reduction In Prices Of Nomination Forms

Ahead of the 2023 general elections, the Convener, Coalition of Civil Society for Good Governance (CCSGG), Comrade Okpanachi Jacob, has appealed to political parties to consider a reduction in the prices of nomination forms.

Okpanachi, who spoke in Abuja, on Friday, during an endorsement programme for notable aspirants for various elective offices, noted that the huge prices of nomination forms will lead to disenfranchisement by political aspirants, especially the youths.

According to him, this would automatically disqualify candidates of goodwill.

“We use this medium to appeal to political parties to be considerate on the cost of nomination forms for elective offices it will lead to disenfranchising candidates of goodwill without enough resources most especially the youths who are most affected by leadership dysfunction over the years as they still control a large portion of our voters’ demography.”

Meanwhile, the CSO endorsed their support for Dr Victor Alewo Adoji for Senate: Kogi East senatorial district, Senator Aliyu Abdullahi Sabi, Niger North senatorial district and Hon. 14. Court Sacks Ex-Speaker, Dogara, From House Of Reps

A Federal High court sitting in Abuja has sacked the former speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Yakubu Dogara, declaring his seat vacant.

The judge, D.U Okorowo on Friday ruled that Dogara’s defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) was inappropriate and ordered him to vacate the legislative seat.

Meanwhile, Mr Dogara who represents Bogoro/Dass Federal constituency of Bauchi State and was speaker of the House between 2015 and 2019 defected to APC after winning his re-election bid under the PDP in 2019.

15.  2023: Gombe Corps Member Donates Allowance To Purchase Presidential Nomination Form For Tinubu

The 2023 presidential aspiration of the National Leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Sen. Bola Ahmed Tinubu got a boost as a serving member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has donated his remaining monthly allowance as his contribution to the Ahmed Bola Tinubu’s presidential project.

The Corps member, Musa Darazo, who is currently serving his fatherland in Gombe State, spoke to journalists at the NUJ Press Center in Bauchi on Friday, saying that the gesture was his own little way of contributing to Bola Ahmed Tinubu to enable him to purchase the Presidential expression of interest and nomination forms.

16. Policy On Raw Materials Ranks Nigeria 115 In 140 Countries — FG

The minister of science, technology and innovation, Dr Ogbonnaya Onu, has said that the ministry’s effort through one of its policies; the national strategy for competitiveness in raw materials has led to the country’s ranking from 115 out of 140 countries in the world economic forum assessment, 2018 to 2019.

He said this during the 27th quarterly meeting with management and staff of the ministry, on Friday, in Abuja.

The minister said that when he came on board, the ministry was in bad shape but was raised to its epoch through the regular meetings with the management and staff.

He, therefore, added that these meetings led to the creation of several other policies amongst which, five were approved, while four are awaiting approval by the federal executive council.

The minister also said that by 2019 the ministry won the Servicom award of Excellency and ranked best performing ministry in terms of service delivery.
