1. 2023: Why Sanwo-Olu deserves second term – Tinubu
The National Leader of All Progressives Congress, Bola Tinubu, has advanced reasons why the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and his Deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, deserved to continue in office beyond 2023.
Tinubu said the duo has built an unbreakable team to raise the bar of excellence in governance and service delivery in the state, with visible achievements and progress to show for their efforts.
The presidential aspirant said this at the party’s stakeholders’ meeting held at Adeyemi Bero Auditorium in Alausa on Friday, where physically raised the hands of Sanwo-Olu and Hamzat, in approval of their second term bid
The formed unbreakable team, the APC National leader said, earned the governor and his deputy the opportunity to return for a second term, and not a blank endorsement that many politicians sought.
2. Emefiele, Onu, Bankole, others obtain APC presidential forms
The All Progressives Congress’ presidential race may have turned into a free-for-all as the number of aspirants jockeying for the ticket swelled beyond 30 on Friday.
This is as the likes of the Central Bank Governor, Godwin Emefiele; Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation, Ogbonnaya Onu; former Ogun State Governor, Ibikunle Amosun; former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dimeji Bankole; and Senator Robert Boroffice obtained copies of their N100m nomination and expression of interest forms.
Our correspondent observed that the weeks-long speculation of Emefiele’s candidacy was laid to rest on Friday morning when a coalition comprising Rice Farmers Association, Emefiele Support Group and Friends of Godwin picked the expression of interest and nomination forms for him.
Emefiele, whose campaign posters were spotted during the March 26 APC national convention, had not openly declared his intention to run for the country’s top office.
3. NYSC anthem composer, Wole Adetiran, is dead
The composer of the National Youth Service Corps anthem, Wole Adetiran, is dead.
The PUNCH learnt that the 74-year-old died on Friday evening.
The Ogun State NYSC Coordinator, Dr Belinda Faniyi, also confirmed the news to our correspondent, stating that she was about to inform the Director-General about the news.
“The LGI just informed me (about the death) so I’ll let DG know,” she said.

4. South West APC Elders meeting with Osinbajo, Tinubu, others affirm rights of all aspirants to contest
A South West APC Elders meeting with presidential, gubernatorial and National Assembly aspirants from the zone ended tonight on a convivial note, as sources confirm that the leaders resolved that every aspirants has a right to contest.
Besides, the meeting, though behind closed doors also resolved that name callings and other personal attacks should no longer be encouraged by aspirants and their supporters.
According to an inside source, “the issue of betrayal was put to rest as the elders affirmed that everyone who desires to run for any political office whatsoever is not encumbered in any way at all.” The leaders and the aspirants all agreed to conduct a rancour free campaign.
The meeting had been convened by the first Chairman of All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief Bisi Akande and a former Governor of Ogun state, Chief Segun Osoba, both of whom served as Co-Conveners.
5. I will ensure safety, free medical services if elected president — Saraki
Former Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki has assured that he will do everything possible to ensure safety and also provide free medical services to Nigerians if elected president in 2023.
Bukola gave the assurance on Friday, while addressing delegates of the Peoples Democratic Party PDP in Katsina State ahead of the forthcoming national convention of the party.
While narrating the ordeal the country is currently undergoing, Bukola said he will bring back peace and safety to Nigeria, if he is given the opportunity.
In his words:
“I am at home. Katsina is my home and that is why I’m coming here first to inform my brothers and all of us that it’s my intention to seek for the position of the president.
6. Ukraine war likely to impact heavily on Africa – UN experts
COVID-19 has ‘pushed back’ democracy in Africa and the war in Ukraine has introduced significant and worrying new risks likely to heavily impact Africa, UN development experts warned on Friday.
According to the experts, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine will effect food security on the continent, both through availability and pricing of imported food, along with rising uncertainties in global financial markets and supply chains.
They noted that Russia and Ukraine, both often referred to as the world’s breadbasket, are major players in the export of wheat and sunflower to Africa.
Between them, Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Morocco, Tunisia, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Sudan and South Africa, account for 80 per cent of all wheat imports, which are projected to reach 76.5 million tonnes by 2025.

7. Police officer, two suspected IPOB/ESN killed in Imo
Two suspected members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB)and its armed affiliate Eastern Security Network (ESN) were gunned down in a duel with police operatives at Agwa in Oguta Local Government Area of Imo State.
The suspects emerged from the surrounding bushes and opened fire on policemen on patrol duty in the area, leading to the death of a police officer.
However, the police engaged the hoodlums in a fierce gun duel, killing two of them.
8. Emefiele should quit as CBN Gov, says Akeredolu
Ondo Governor Rotimi Akeredolu has asked Central Bank Governor Godwin Emefiele to disengage, having joined the presidential race.
He said in a statement personally signed by him that his entry into the contest will distract him, warning that it is dangerous for the economy.
The statement reads:”The news of the purchase of Declaration of Intent and Nomination Forms to contest for the office of the President in the forthcoming general elections, on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, purportedly by the supporters of the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr Godwin Emefiele, has been received with palpable disbelief and shock by many Nigerians. This act, if unchecked, timeously, portends great danger to the fragile economy of the country.

9. 2023: South-West united to produce president – Bisi Akande
Bisi Akande, a founding member of the All Progressives Congress, APC, has said the South-West is united to produce Nigeria’s next president in 2023.
Akande spoke following the conclusion of the meeting of APC Presidential aspirants from the South-West held in Lagos on Friday.
A tweet from Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s Senior Special Assistant on New Media, Jubril Gawat, reads: “MEETING CONCLUDED: Baba Akande says we are united for South-West to produce the president in 2023.”
The meeting of APC Presidential aspirants from the South-West was convened by Olusegun Osoba.
10. APC constitutes, inaugurates ‘Council of Elders’ in Yobe [See List]
Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni, on Friday, inaugurated the newly constituted APC Council of Elders on Reconciliation to strengthen unity and understanding among members of the party in the state.
The Governor was represented by his Deputy, Idi Barde Gubana, who noted that the council is significant for the party as it would pave way for the party to strengthen internal democracy and foster mutual understanding among members of the APC.
The Council of Elders, according to him is primarily constituted to maintain unity and put the interest of the party above interest of individuals within the party (APC.)
“I have no doubt in the ability of members of the council to discharge their responsibilities diligently”, said Governor Buni.
