1. Soldiers kill 27 terrorists, rescue six kidnap victims
Troops of the Multinational Joint Task Force said it neutralised 27 Islamic State in West Africa Province terrorists in collaboration with the Air Task Force.
It also said six traumatised female hostages were rescued during a clearance operation.
This was contained in a statement, on Wednesday, by the Chief of Military Public Information Headquarters, MNJTF, Colonel Muhammad Dole.
The statement, however, said one soldier died during the operation.
It read in part, “The ATF identified intelligence-driven targets which they engaged using multiple sorties in the vicinity of Tumbun Fulani and Tumbun Rago, where about twenty terrorists were neutralised
2. AfDB plans Africa’s climate finance increment to $25bn
The African Development Bank says it will within the next five years double the climate change finance of Africa to 25 billion dollars.
AfDB Vice-President for Power, Energy, Climate, and Green Growth, Dr Kevin Kariuki, said this at a virtual news conference on Wednesday in preparation for the bank’s 2022 annual meetings to be held in Accra, Ghana.
Kariuki said the bank would invest the finance to support African countries to become resilient both in adaptation and mitigation between 2020 and 2025.
He disclosed that the AfDB had in the last five years spent 13 billion dollars in the same effort toward adaptation and mitigation of climate change in the continent.
Kariuki also said the bank with the Global Centre on Adaptation had committed to mobilise a further 25 billion dollars to address adaptation in Africa.
3. Jos: Gunmen kill pregnant woman, kidnap pastor, two children
Gunmen, in a recent attack, kidnapped a Jos-based cleric, Yohanna Matongs, and two children.
It was learnt that Matongs who is a pastor with the Church of Christ in Nations was kidnapped at his house in Dadin Kowa community, Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau state.
Residents of Dadin Kowa told the PUNCH in Jos on Wednesday night that the gunmen who attacked the pastor’s house also killed a pregnant woman and equally went away with her two kids.
One of the residents said “Our colleague, Pastor Yohanna Yaro Matongs, was kidnapped last night, 19 April, 2022.
“He was abducted from his house at Cocin Center, Rodya, LCC Rahwol Ramun, RCC Dadin Kowa, Jos.
4. Man City vs Brighton: City win 3-0 to return top of EPL table
Manchester City held their nerve to move back above Liverpool at the top of the Premier League with a 3-0 win over Brighton on Wednesday.
Riyad Mahrez, Phil Foden and Bernardo Silva all struck in the second half as Pep Guardiola’s men edged one point ahead in the title race with six games to go.
Guardiola recalled a number of key players he had left out for Saturday’s 3-2 FA Cup semi-final defeat by Liverpool, but it took City time to break Brighton’s resolve at a tense Etihad.

Chief Ede Dafinone and Chief John Nani have joined the race to succeed Deputy Senate President, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, as Delta Central legislator in the Upper Chamber of the National Assembly.
While Dafinone is aspiring on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Nani is seeking the slot on the banner of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP. Also, while the APC currently holds the Senate seat, the PDP is the ruling party in Delta State.

6. Naira closes at 418.33/dollar at investors and exporters window
The Naira exchanged at 418.33 to the dollar at the Investors and Exporters window on Wednesday, representing a 0.32 per cent depreciation, compared to 417 naira to the dollar recorded on Tuesday.
The open indicative rate closed at 418.25 naira to the dollar on Wednesday.
An exchange rate of 444 naira to the dollar was the highest rate recorded within the day’s trading before it settled at 418.33 naira.
The naira sold for as low as 410 to the dollar within the day’s trading.
7. Inflation: Central Banks should raise interest rates – IMF
The International Monetary Fund (IMF), has called on Central banks across the globe to raise interest rates, in order to halt the escalating inflationary trends.
IMF Director of Monetary and Capital Markets, Tobias Adrian, made this call at a press briefing on the latest Global Financial Stability Report, in Washington DC, United states of America, on Tuesday.
Describing inflation as the most important challenge, Adrian suggested that actions were needed to aggressively bring inflation down back to target.
According to him, “Consumers expect prices to continue to rise rapidly in the short term before inflationary pressures start to recede over the medium term. But this could change.
8. Bandits kill newly elected LG councillor, two others, abduct several in Katsina
Gunmen suspected to be terrorists have reportedly killed one of the newly elected local government councillors and two other residents within Malumfashi – Kafur LGA axis of Katsina State early hours of Wednesday morning.
Magaji Nasir, the newly elected councillor, sprayed with bullets in the attack was rushed to the Malumfashi General Hospital where he was confirmed dead.
One of the residents from the community who spoke to Vanguard disclosed that the armed bandits, numbering over 10, stormed the Gozaki community a little after midnight, shooting sporadically.

9. AbdulRazaq swears in seven perm secs
Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq yesterday swore in seven permanent secretaries.
He urged them to be good team players, saying they should join the rebuilding efforts of his administration.
The permanent secretaries are: Ibrahim Mohammed (Establishment), Yahya Mohammed (Water Resources), Sidikat Alaya (Tertiary Education), Iyabo Dupe Adekeye (Environment), Umar Yakubu Jaja (Planning), Salman Suleiman (Service Welfare) and Rebecca Bake (Social Development).
10. APC stakeholders endorse Fayemi’s ex-commissioner for Senate
Some members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti State have endorsed former House of Representatives member and Commissioner for Public Utilities under Governor Kayode Fayemi, Bamidele Faparusi, for Senate.
The APC stakeholders said they took the decision in response to former Governor Ayodele Fayose’s anointing of his former deputy, Prof. Kolapo Olusola, as candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ekiti South.
The stakeholders, under the aegis of Ekiti South APC Mandate Group, said after expanded consultations with APC leadership in the six local governments in Ekiti South, they found Faparusi apt, fit and popular to rescue the party from imminent defeat.
In a statement in Ado-Ekiti yesterday by the group’s Chairman, Femi Adeleye, the stakeholders said the body had issued one-week ultimatum to Faparusi to declare for the Senate and salvage the APC from losing the district to opposition parties.
11. Three ADC commissioners, others join PDP in Oyo
Three commissioners in Oyo State, a special adviser and some local government political functionaries, who are members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), have defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Dr. Wasiu Olatunbosun, announced the decision in Ibadan yesterday at a news conference.
Olatunbosun, flanked by some of the defectors, gave the names of the commissioners as: Seun Ashamu (Ministry of Energy & Mineral Resources), Adeniyi Adebisi (Ministry of Agricultural Resources) and his humble self.
12. Abductors demand N100m ransom for popular Akwa Ibom cleric
Abductors of a popular pastor in Akwa Ibom State, Apostle John Okoriko, are demanding N100million ransom before he could be released from their captivity.
Okoriko, who is the Founder and President of Solid Rock Kingdom Church, was reportedly kidnapped on Tuesday night at his church premises in Ibekwe Akpan Nya in Mkpat Enin local government area.
An eyewitness said the hoodlums jumped through the fence and forced their way into the cleric’s living room.

13. Traders Lament As Soludo Marks 200 Houses For Demolition In Onitsha
Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State, has maintained that the state government will go ahead to demolish about 200 houses marked for the exercise at Onitsha, the commercial city of the state.
Tribune Online learnt that the state physical town planning board had earlier marked the houses for demolition for blocking the drainage systems in the Onitsha metropolis.
The state governor had recently embarked upon the clearing and desilting exercise in the Onitsha communities, to restore the glory of the metropolis.
Soludo, who was represented by his deputy, Mr Onyekachukwu Ibezim, stated this on Wednesday, during a meeting with the affected landlords at the Onitsha South Secretariat, Onitsha.
14. Naira Records 300% Devaluation In 15 Years ― NEPC
Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC) has revealed that the naira has recorded a devaluation of over 300 per cent over the past 15 years.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Wednesday, the Executive Director of NEPC, Dr Ezra Yakusak explained that the preceding years have shown deep susceptibilities in the non-oil export sector of the economy in particular and indeed the Nigerian economy in general.
“This has been mainly due to uncertainties faced from global crude oil prices and the adverse effect of Covid 19. In the last 15 years, the Naira has recorded over 300% devaluation.
“This disturbing trend has been attributed to Nigeria’s inability to earn foreign exchange from other products, due to our mono-cultural economy.”
15. 2023: I Need Only Four Years As President To Reposition Nigeria ― Peter Obi
One of the People Democratic Party (PDP) presidential aspirant in the 2023 general election, Mr Peter Obi, has said that he needed only four years to reposition Nigeria for good again, if given the opportunity as President.
He said that the country, at the moment, is unproductive and that it needs to move from consumption to production.
Obi, stated this when some prominent stakeholders in Anambra State, on Wednesday, endorsed him for president.
The stakeholders said that their support for his presidential aspiration was based on his impressive performance in the state while in office as Anambra governor.
16. High Cap Stocks’ Gain Pushes Market To Positive Close
The Nigerian equities market posted the biggest single day gain in three months as the benchmark index inched up 1.25 per cent to close at 48,138.71 basis points.
At the Nigerian Exchange Limited (NGX) on Wednesday, bulls held sway as positive outing extended into second trading session of the week, due to impressive outing by such high cap stocks such as Seplat, Airtel Africa, Dangote Cement and Nigerian Breweries.
With the positive trade, the month-to-date and year-to-date performance of the All-Share Index (ASI) settled at 2.50 per cent and 12.69 per cent respectively.
Thus, equities investors gained N339 billion also as the equities market capitalization settled at N25.632 trillion.
