1. UN Secretary-General arrives Ukraine

The United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, has announced his arrival in Kyiv on Wednesday following talks in Moscow with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“I have arrived in Ukraine after visiting Moscow,” he wrote on his official Twitter account as he landed ahead of talks with Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky.

“We will continue our work to expand humanitarian support and secure the evacuation of civilians from conflict zones. The sooner this war ends, the better for the sake of Ukraine, Russia, and the world,” Guterres tweeted.

At the Moscow talks on Tuesday, Guterres repeated calls for both Russia and Ukraine to work together to set up “safe and effective” humanitarian corridors in war-torn Ukraine.

2. Ukraine: UN suspends Russia from tourism body

The United Nations’ tourism body, on Wednesday, suspended Russia from the agency over its invasion of Ukraine, arguing that it had breached its statutes.

“Most of the 159 member states of the UN World Tourism Organisation backed the move, which was taken at an extraordinary general assembly,”  a spokesman for the Madrid-based body said.

The motion, which required a two-thirds majority, was proposed by 22 member states including Spain, Japan, Poland, and France in March.

The agency spokesman did not say precisely how many members had supported it.

3. Naira exchanges at 418.38 per dollar

The Naira exchanged at 419.33 to the dollar at the Investors and Exporters window on Wednesday, a 0.20 per cent depreciation, compared to 418.50 to the dollar on Tuesday.

The open indicative rate closed at 418.38 to the dollar on Wednesday.

An exchange rate of 444 to the dollar was the highest rate recorded within the day’s trading before it settled at N419.33.

The Naira sold for as low as 410 to the dollar within the day’s trading.

4. Invest in your country, Gambari urges Nigerians

Prof. Ibrahim Gambari, Chief of Staff (CoS) to President Muhammadu Buhari, has urged Nigerians to cultivate the habit of investing in the country to address employment challenges.

Gambari made this call on Wednesday at 30th Anniversary and 14th Convocation Lecture of the Delta University (DELSU), Abraka. Ethiope East Local Government Area.

Delivering  lecture on the topic: “Contemporary Issues in Education and Development in Nigeria”, he said investing in the country would help curtail youth restiveness and other social vices.

Gambari said there could be no meaningful development without peace.

He said that peace, respect for human rights and free and fair elections were vital to the growth and development of any nation.

5. Stakeholders fault SON over quest for presence in-ports

Stakeholders in the Nigeria’s ports industry have said that the campaign by the Standard Organisation of Nigeria, SON, to return to the ports is questionable.

They explained that the claims by SON that its presence at the port will help reduce the flooding of the nation’s markets with sub-standard goods, is not only false but unfounded since its officials are still operating at the seaports despite the Federal Government’s directive to the contrary.

The stakeholders spoke at a Harboursandport WhatsApp group (Maritime industry experts discussion platform), noted that without SON’s release authorisation signed and endorsed by the Customs Area Command, CAC, importers’ release and clearance of such SON related imports is dead on arrival.

6. NLC seeks FG intervention in ASUU strike

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called on the Federal Government to address issues that necessitated the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities(ASUU) and other unions in tertiary institutions.

President of NLC, Ayuba Wabba, made the call when he addressed newsmen shortly before going into a closed door meeting of the Congress’s Central Working Committee (CWC) on Wednesday in Abuja

Recall  that ASUU embarked on a nationwide warning strike to press home its members’ demands from Feb. 14.

The lecturers’ demands include; funding of the Revitalisation of Public Universities, Earned Academic Allowances, University Transparency Accountability Solution (UTAS) and promotion arrears.

7. Wike declares Dagogo wanted for alleged attack on PDP secretariat

Rivers Governor Nyesom Wike has declared a House of Representatives member and governorship aspirant, Farah Dagogo, wanted for allegedly hiring cultists to attack the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) secretariat in Port Harcourt.

The Governor, in a statement by his Special Assistant, Media, Kelvin Ebiri, directed the Rivers State Police Command to arrest Dagogo.

Wike accused the federal lawmaker of hiring cultists, who stormed the PDP secretariat in Port Harcourt and disrupted the screening of aspirants for various elective positions.

“The Police must as a matter of urgency arrest Farah Dagogo, wherever he is, and must be made to face prosecution.

8. $418m Paris Club debt: Court okays contempt suit against 36 States’ lawyers

A Federal High Court in Abuja has granted permission for the commencement of contempt proceedings against some senior lawyers engaged by the 36 States in their effort to block the payment of the $418million debt owed consultants engaged by states and Local Governments for the recovery of their share of the Paris Club debt refund.

Justice Inyang Ekwo on Wednesday, granted an ex-parte application by lawyers to one of the consultants – Panic Alerts Security Systems Limited.

Justice Ekwo ordered that the processes. in relation to the contempt suit be served on the affected lawyer through a courier service.

The court’s order was informed by complaint by lawyer to Panic Alert, Emeka Okoro that the lawyers allegedly  refused to accept personal service of the court documents.

9. Osun Amotekun Apprehends Ritual Killer In Ilesa

A 33-year-old alleged ritual killer, Afeez Odusanya was on Wednesday quizzed by the Osun State Security Network codenamed ‘Amotekun’ for exhuming the corpse of a dead body and removal of its tooth for money ritual purposes.

The ritual killer who was said to be apprehended at the graveyard where he was carrying out his unholy act after a tip-off, was paraded at one of the Amotekun’s offices in the Sabo area of Osogbo, Osun State capital.

Speaking on his unholy act, Odusanya explained, “I started my quest for money ritual in 2016 but it failed twice after several rites. During that time, I evacuated two dead bodies but I was arrested after the third attempt at the Ilesa burial ground.

“I was caught after I evacuated a corpse at a burial ground in Ilesha which I want to use for money ritual. I have been evacuating corpses since 2016 and removing their parts for money ritual purposes but the rites failed. I evacuated corpses at Sagamu, Ogun State but was caught in Osun while trying to remove the tooth of a corpse.

10. Insecurity: Zamfara Govt Sacks Two Emirs, One District Head

Zamfara State Government has approved the immediate deposition of Emir of Zurmi, Alhaji Abubakar Atiku Muhammad and Emir of Dansadau, Sarkin Kudu Alhaji Hussaini Umar.

It would be recalled, that the two traditional rulers have been suspended since last year on the allegations of aiding banditry in their respective domain.

In March, 2021, it was gathered that the people of Zurmi marched to the palace and vandalized the palace.

Similarly, the government approved the immediate removal of the District Head of Birnin tsaba, in Zurmi emirate Alhaji Suleiman Ibrahim Danyabi
