1. Elephant kills Colombian researcher in Uganda

A Colombian researcher has been trampled to death by an elephant in Kibale National Park in western Uganda, the country’s national parks authority said Monday.

Ramirez Amaya Sebastian, based at Arizona State University in the United States, was with another researcher and a guide in the national park, known for its wildlife and research centre, when he died.

“They came across a lone elephant that charged them, forcing them to run in different directions,” Uganda’s national parks authority said in a statement on Monday.

“The elephant chased Sebastian and trampled him, resulting in his death,” the statement added, saying it was the first such deadly incident in the national park for 50 years.

In January, a Saudi tourist was trampled to death by an elephant during a game drive at another popular park in Uganda, Murchison Falls, after leaving the car he was travelling in.

2. Troops neutralise terrorists, destroy bunkers around Lake Chad

The Nigerian Army has said troops of Operation Lake Sanity have neutralised several terrorists and recovered weapons and equipment in an operation around the Lake Chad axis.

In a terse statement, the Nigerian Army also said the troops destroyed a vehicle fabrication workshop and several bunkers used by Boko Haram terrorists and their Islamic State West Africa Province counterparts.

“Gallant troops of Operation LAKE SANITY today neutralised several terrorists and recovered weapons/ equipment around the Lake Chad axis. BokoHaram/ISWAP Central Vehicle Fabrication Workshop & several bunkers were also discovered and destroyed,” the statement read.

3. Sit-at-home: Gunmen kill one, torch vehicle in Enugu -Police

The Police Command in Enugu State, on Monday, confirmed the death of an unidentified male traveller after yet-to-be-identified gunmen attacked a Sienna vehicle in Enugu.

The Command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Daniel Ndukwe, told the News Agency of Nigeria in Enugu that an unidentified male traveller was confirmed dead after being hit when the yet-to-be-identified gunmen attacked.

It was gathered that the unidentified male traveller had allegedly boarded the Sienna vehicle heading to Onitsha within the early hours of this Monday, April 11, at the Holy Ghost Roundabout axis of Enugu metropolis.

Ndukwe said: “Yet-to-be identified miscreants, operating in a mini-bus, shot an unidentified male traveller and in the process torched a Sienna vehicle around Holy Ghost Roundabout axis in the early morning hours of today.

4. MTN gets final approval to operate payment service bank

The Central Bank of Nigeria has granted Momo Payment Service Bank Limited final approval to commence operations.

This was revealed in a statement signed by the company’s secretary, Uto Ukpanah, on Monday.

This is coming after the CBN granted the firm approval in principle to operate in November 2021.

The statement read, “We refer to our notification issued on 5 November 2021 in which we communicated receipt of the approval in principle from the CBN for Momo PSB.

5. Train Attack: Relations issue govt 72hrs ultimatum to rescue kidnapped victims

A 72-hour ultimatum has been issued to the government by relations of kidnapped victims during the Abuja-Kaduna train attack, who alleged that the government has been insensitive to their plight, two weeks after the incident.

“Since the incident, the Nigerian Railway Corporation is yet to reach out to us on efforts made to rescue the kidnapped victims,” they said.

They, therefore, handed down a 72-hour-ultimatum to ensure the safe rescue of their beloved ones from the den of the terrorists, adding that failure to listen to them, would force them to take a decision on how to rescue their loved ones.

They spoke after their meeting on Monday in Kaduna, saying that they had yet to be contacted by the terrorists for negotiation.

6. FG handing over Ajaokuta Steel Company to British firm, fake news — Adegbite

The Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Arc Olamilekan Adegbite, Monday, said alleged handing over Ajaokuta Steel Company to a British firm as reported by some media organisations is fake news.

Adegbite while clearing air on the alleged handover of the multi-billion steel complex to a British firm, in a statement signed by his Special Assistant on Media, Ayodeji Adeyemi, explained that a local Nigerian firm which has a British partner, had expressed interest in carrying out the Technical Audit, T.A, for free with no preconditions, and not that the Federal Government handed over Ajaokuta Steel Company to an alleged British firm.

7. Woman, 25, in court over alleged threat to pastor, family

A 25-year-old woman, Chidinma Umeh, on Monday appeared before an Ogudu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State, charged with threatening the lives of one Pastor L.O Oshiyemi and his family members.

The defendant, who is standing trial on a two-count charge of threat to life and willful damage, however, rebutted commission of the offences. .

The Prosecutor, Insp. Donjour Perezi told the court that the defendant committed the offences on March 22 at 5:00 p.m., at No. 16, Ogundare Awise Street, Ifako, Gbagada in Lagos.

Perezi said that the defendant threatened Oshiyemi and his family with extreme violence by invading his abode, throwing stones and beer bottles into his premises.

8. 2023: it’s time for possible change in Ondo North — Ajipe assures

An investment expert and a leading Ondo North Senatorial hopeful under the All Progressives Congress, in Ondo State, Chief Alex Ajipe has promised massive and positive change in the area if voted in.

Ajipe assures that the once-bustling commercial nerve of the state will no more become a shadow of itself.

He said that ” recent history has it that the Northern Senatorial District of Ondo State used to be the major commercial hub with the influx of goods from the northern parts of the country.

9. FG vows to get justice for late ‘Ekwueme’ singer Osinachi

The Federal Government has vowed to get justice for the late popular gospel artiste, Osinachi Nwachukwu.

The Nation reports on April 8, Osinachi, the gospel singer known for her collaborative hit track ‘Ekwueme’, died at an Abuja hospital where she was being treated for an ailment.

Since her demise, there have been allegations the singer was a victim of domestic violence.

10. Power failure: Ice block now over N200 in Gusau

Ice-block made from 50ml sachet water now sells for between N200 and N250 in Gusau, the Zamfara capital.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that this was caused in parts of the capital city by the current erratic or total absence of electricity.

Hajiya Hauwa’u Suleiman, a housewife who sells the sachet water and ice blocks said, her freezers could no longer freeze water into ice as there was no light to power them.

11. 2023: Jubilation in Akure as Osinbajo declares for presidency

Some All Progressives Congress (APC) members in Ondo State, on Monday, organised a gathering to show solidarity for Vice President Yemi Osinbajo’s declaration to run for the presidency in the 2023 general elections.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that many of the supporters also trooped to the streets of Akure on Monday morning to celebrate the declaration

Mr Ifeoluwa Fasoranti, Director General, Yemi Osinbajo Campaign Organisation, who addressed the crowd at Akure Town Hall, said the people are happy to hear that the vice president has finally declared interest in the presidency.

12. One inmate dead, others injured in Rivers Correctional Centre riot

At least one inmate has died and others were injured during a free-for-all that broke out at the Port Harcourt correctional centre.

The Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the centre, Juliet Ofoni, confirmed the incident on Monday.

She said it happened at the old Port Harcourt township correctional centre.

13. Only 20 % of health facilities have sanitation facilities, says Minister

The Minister of Water Resources, Mr Suleiman Adamu, on Monday, said that only 20 per cent of hospitals have basic sanitation facilities, adding that this should raise concerns over the poor hygiene situations in the country.

Adamu said this at the Inter-Ministerial Dialogue on Sanitation in Abuja.

According to him, these statistics are abysmally low and Nigerians should show more commitment to change the narrative.

He said that the meeting was an opportunity to highlight and maximise the role sanitation and hygiene were playing in preventing and mitigating disease outbreak in the country.

14. NPHCDA receives 3m additional doses of COVID-19 vaccines from Italy

The National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), on Monday in Abuja, received over three million single-shot COVID-19 vaccines, donated by the Italian government.

The News Agency of Nigeria(NAN) reports that with the 17 million doses earlier sent by other EU Member States, the three million brings the number of doses gifted to Nigeria by EU Member States to 20 million, representing 61 per cent of all donated vaccines received by Nigeria through the COVAX facility.

Also in February, the Nigerian Government, through the Federal Ministry of Health and NPHCDA, formally rolled out the administration of J&J vaccine across the country, rapidly improving coverage.

15. Gunmen murder new community head in Kaduna

Gunmen have murdered a newly installed community leader in Chikun Local Council, Kaduna State, Isiaku Madaki, at his Kakura residence, yesterday.

A resident of Kakura, Baban David, disclosed to journalists that the deceased was, on Saturday, installed as the community’s leader.

Kakura, a community predominantly occupied by the Gbagi ethnic group, has other tribes with few Fulani settlers, who have lived in the community for decades.

David said: “We all gathered in his residence on Saturday to rejoice with him over his appointment. However, we were shocked when in the early hours of Sunday, we began to hear gunshots. We could not come out of our houses due to fear. Later, we were told that the gunmen had killed him in the presence of his wife and other family members.

16. Lagos tasks stakeholders on end to bullying, accidents in schools

Lagos State government, yesterday, said school safety should be the concern of all, reason stakeholders must be involved to make pupils feel safe in school environment.

The state government said it would initiate proactive measures to curb bullying and accidents in public and private schools.
It stated this at a Safe School Initiative workshop organised by the Lagos Safety Commission and Office of Education Quality Assurance in collaboration with School Run Academy with the theme, “Creating A Safety Culture and Compliance.”

The state’s Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Folashade Adefisayo, said the move by the government was to prevent a repeat of the incident that claimed lives of students and injured about 17 others at Babs Fafunwa Millennium School, Ojodu, in December last year.
