1. Russian strikes kill eight civilians in east Ukraine

Russian strikes on Monday killed at least eight civilians in the embattled eastern Ukrainian regions of Donetsk and Lugansk, local authorities said.

Four died as they tried to escape the city of Kreminna which Russian forces captured earlier on Monday, Lugansk regional governor Sergiy Gaiday said on Telegram.

“Several people tried to flee and the orcs (Russian forces) shot the car. Four people died instantly,” he said, adding that another person was injured.

Four other civilians died in Russian bombing in the neighbouring region of Donetsk around 20 kilometres (12 miles) east of Kreminna, according to regional governor Pavlo Kyrylenko.

2. Wike faults Buhari’s anti-corruption fight, questions EFCC, ICPC’s relevance

Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike has faulted the anti-corruption fight of the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), following the state pardon granted to a former Governor of Plateau, Joshua Dariye, and his Taraba State counterpart, Jolly Nyame, who were convicted for corruption.

This is he also asked the President to disband the Economic and Financial Crime Commission and the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission since their efforts were coming to naught after painstakingly working to nab corrupt officials who were later being granted a presidential pardon.

Wike, according to a statement by his Special Assistant, Media, Kelvin Ebiri, spoke while addressing the Peoples Democratic Party delegates in Kano State on Monday as part of his ongoing consultation ahead of the party’s presidential primary.

3. Chrisland: What my son told me about leaked tape –Wizkid’s babymama, Shola Ogudu

Shola Ogudu, the mother of singer Wizkid’s son, Boluwatife, has narrated what she was told about the “immoral act” engaged in by students of Chrisland Schools, Lagos.

The incident happened when the students travelled to Dubai to participate in the World School Games from March 10 to 13.

Ogudu said her son described the video as disgusting, claiming that the female student involved didn’t immediately know the implication of her action.

She also urged parents to pay close attention to their children while narrating what she heard via her Instagram handle, @O.Oluwashola.

4. Barca’s top four bid shaken after 1-0 defeat to Cadiz

Barcelona’s place in La Liga’s top four looks much less secure after they suffered a surprise 1-0 defeat at home to relegation-battling Cadiz on Monday.

Lucas Perez’s close-range finish early in the second half condemned Barca to a second consecutive defeat, on the back of their shock exit at the hands of Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League on Thursday.

Barcelona stayed second but are level on points with both Sevilla in third and Atletico Madrid in fourth while Real Betis in fifth are only three points behind. Xavi Hernandez’s team do have a game in hand over the trio below them.

But the loss means Barca have won only one of their last four matches, that victory coming via an injury-time winner against 19th-placed Levante.

5. Attack on Anambra eatery: Police urge prompt report of robberies

The Anambra Police Command has called on residents of the state to ensure prompt reports of robbery incidents for quick response by the command.

The command’s Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Toochukwu Ikenga, made the call in a statement issued in Awka on Monday.

Ikenga was reacting to a reported attack on an eatery in Oko in Orumba North Local Government Area, where people were allegedly dispossessed of their valuables.

6. You can put away your clerical garb, join partisan politics, Presidency replies Bishop Kukah

THE Presidency last night told the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, His Grace Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah to put away his clerical garb and join partisan politics to test his popularity.

The Presidency also accused the Catholic cleric of always dabbling in politics and spreading hate against President Muhammadu Buhari

Reacting to Bishop Kukah”s Easter message where he allegedly accused the President of dividing Nigeria against religious and ethnic lines, the Presidency said that the Catholic Bishop refused to give any proof to the allegations.

7. We didn’t conduct pregnancy tests on any students — Chrisland Schools

The management of Chrisland Schools, Lagos has said it did not conduct pregnancy tests on any of its students that attended the World School Games in Dubai, UAE, last month.

Rather, the management said it only conducted the COVID-19 tests on the students when they returned from the said trip in accordance with laid down protocols on the pandemic.

This was contained in a statement issued on Monday night by Mr Akin Fadeyi, a member of the Advisory Board of the school.

8. Police begin investigation on alleged viral Chrisland School rape video

The Police Command in Lagos State said on Monday that it had begun an investigation into the alleged viral rape video purportedly depicting students of Chrisland School, Lagos.

The spokesman for the command, SP Benjamin Hundey, said in a statement that the Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Abiodun Alabi, ordered the investigation.

Recall that a video of a 10-year-old female student of Chrisland Schools Lagos, allegedly raped by fellow students during a trip to Dubai, UAE, went viral recently.

9. 2023: Bello ready for open contest, says Campaign DG

The Director-General of Yahaya Bello Presidential Campaign Organisation, Hafsat Abiola-Costello yesterday said the Kogi State governor is ready for an open contest during the primaries of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

She said Bello was not intimidated in any form as a contender for the 2023 presidency.

She said the governor was looking forward to a free and fair contest with other aspirants.

Abiola-Castello, who spoke at a news conference in Abuja on Sunday, asked  Nigerians to give the governor a chance to prove his mettle to lead the nation.

10. Nigeria is broken, Kukah insists

The Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese Matthew Kukah yesterday criticised the Federal Government’s handling of security, saying it had broken the country.

According to him, President Muhammadu Buhari had yet to realise that he could determine how the country could “end the war that has engulfed and is tearing down our nation.”

The Bishop, in an Easter message to his congregation in Sokoto, likened Nigeria to an emergency hospital with full occupancy.

He said: “The challenge of fixing this broken nation is enormous and, as I have said, requires joint efforts. With everything broken down, our country has become one big emergency national hospital with full occupancy.

“Our hearts are broken. Our family dreams are broken. Homes are broken. Churches, Mosques, and infrastructure are broken. Our educational system is broken.

11. Aspirants step up governorship ticket chase

Governorship aspirants seeking tickets on the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) platforms are intensifying their push.

Many of them threw their hats into the ring for slots in Lagos, Kano, Kaduna, Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Benue states.

The PDP has extended the sale of nomination and expression of interest forms till tomorrow and submission till Wednesday.

The National Working Committee (NWC) of the APC has scheduled the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting for Wednesday to take a decision on the party’s timetable and guidelines for its primaries.

In Lagos, six aspirants are battling for the PDP ticket.

12. Yari, Marafa head for PDP

Barely few weeks after losing out in the race for chairmanship, a former Governor of Zamfara State, Abdulaziz Yari has opted to defect from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

He is likely to move to the opposition party with Senator Kabiru Garba Marafa.

It was gathered that the terms of the defection have been perfected.

According to Ibrahim Birnin Magaji, the Publicity Secretary of a group within Zamfara APC loyal to the former governor, Yari and Marafa were set to defect to PDP.

He said: “It is true, Yari and Sen. Marafa will soon move from APC to PDP.”

Asked how soon the defection would take place, he said: “Very, very soon.”

13. Police Arrest Gang Responsible For Shooting Governor Ayade’s SA

Men of the Nigeria Police in Cross River have arrested a suspected crime kingpin, Godswill Emmanuel, a.k.a Emperor and two members of his gang.

Commissioner of Police in Cross River, Mr Aminu Alhassan, confirmed the arrest on Monday in Calabar.

The gang members were said to have been responsible for the shooting of Gov. Ben Ayade’s Security Adviser, Mr Ani Esin, in 2018.

They were arrested at a hotel in Akampka Local Government Area of Cross River.

The Cross River government and the police declared `Emperor’ wanted in 2018 after he attacked and shot the governor’s security adviser in Calabar.

14. Delta ALGON Asks UPU To Withdraw Adoption Of Governorship Aspirant Ahead PDP Primaries

Assocciation of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON) has urged the Urhobo Progress Union (UPU) to withdraw its adoption of a governorhip aspirant as its preferred Urhobo candidate ahead of the primaries of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the interest of unity and love in Urhobo land and the state.

The Delta Central chapter of ALGON gave the counsel on Monday at a press conference attended by the local government council chairmen in Delta Central.

Nigerian Tribune reports that UPU, the apex socio-cultural organisation in Urhobo land, has in an advertorial publication reportedly thrown its weight behind a governorship aspirant, Chief David Edevbie, to emerge PDP candidate ahead of its primary.

Addressing journalists on behalf of others at the press conference, Chairman of Ughelli South Local Government Area, Dr. Richard Kofi, said it was clear from the advertorial that the current leadership of the UPU was being misguided.

Kofi, who was flanked by his counterparts, said; “Our reaction, therefore, is to guide and passionately appeal to the UPU leadership, whose primary duty is to promote the culture and tradition of the Urhobo people to strictly adhere to the vision and mission of the founding fathers.

15. MNJTF Eliminates 100 Terrorists In Lake Chad

TROOPS of the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) have eliminated about 100 Boko Haram/ Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists, including 10 key commanders in the Lake Chad region, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) has reported.

The Chief of Military Public Information for MNJTF, Colonel Muhammad Dole, in a statement on Sunday, said the troops successfully hit the enclaves in well-coordinated land and air offensives.

Dole said the offensives were conducted under Operation Lake Sanity, the joint operations involving the MNJTF troops from Nigeria, Niger and Cameroon and troops from Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK-Nigeria).

He said the operation also included the combined Air Task Forces of MNJTF and OPHK other security agencies and the Civilian Joint Taskforce (CJTF).

Dole said the troops raided the insurgents’ dens in Zanari, Arina Woje, which served as major fabrication workshops, and several other locations around the islands from different corridors in the last one week.

16. Extortion: Lagos Bans Military Checkpoints In Apapa, Outlaws Nine Illegal Checkpoints

As part of the Lagos State Government efforts to eliminate traffic gridlock and curb illegal extortion along the Apapa/Tin-Can port axis, the State Government has identified nine illegal checkpoints were trucks will no longer be allowed to be stopped. This is even as the State Government banned all military checkpoints along the port corridor in Lagos port area.

In a statement signed on Monday by the Special Adviser on Transportation to the Lagos State Government, Oluwatoyin Fayinka, the State Government said that trucks will no longer be stopped at checkpoints located at Ijora Badia (LPC axis), Mile 2 Under and Over the bridge, UBA (TCIPC corridor), NAGAFF Area B, RRS Marine Bridge, 7up, Fidelity Roundabout, Etisalat Roundabout (LPC axis) and RRS (TCIPC corridor).

According to the statement, “At a Stakeholder meeting with Transport Unions, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Hon. Oluwatoyin Fayinka declared that the State Government will enforce zero tolerance on illegal extortions and activities of miscreants along the corridor through Special Mobile Courts created to address the aforementioned challenges.

“Fayinka also explained that in streamlining the corridor, illegal extortion points will be disbanded and the agencies charged with the role of managing traffic flow along the axis have been clearly defined and assigned to prevent any illegal activity that can hinder the smooth port operations for all Stakeholders.
