1. My presidency will solve leadership problem in Nigeria -Wike

The Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, has said if elected as President of Nigeria, he will solve the leadership problem that has stunted economic growth.

According to him, he has clarity of purpose and the capacity to galvanise and coordinate the abundant human talents, expertise and resources in steering the county to greatness.

Wike said this on Tuesday when he met with Imo State delegates of the Peoples Democratic Party at the party’s secretariat in Owerri, as part of his ongoing consultation ahead of the party’s presidential primary next month.

Special Assistant on Media to the Rivers State Governor, Kelvin Ebiri, made this known in a statement on Tuesday, titled ‘My Presidency Will Address Leadership Deficit In Nigeria -Wike.’

2. 2023: Ondo commissioner for information, Ojogo, resigns

Following the directive of the Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, that all political appointees who are vying for elective positions ahead of the 2023 general election should resign, the state Commissioner for Information, Mr Donald Ojogo, has tendered his resignation letter.

Ojogo resigned his appointment from Akeredolu’s cabinet a few hours after the governor gave the directive on Tuesday.

In a letter addressed to the governor, the former commissioner expressed appreciation to the governor for the opportunity to serve in his government.

The letter read, “I write to inform you of my resignation from the Cabinet of Ondo State Government as Commissioner with effect from Thursday, 14 April 2022.

3. Airports suspend flights as dust storm covers Iraq

A dust storm blanketed Iraq on Tuesday, sending people to the hospital with breathing difficulties and leading airports to suspend flights.

It followed a similar storm that blew over the country late last week which left dozens hospitalised with respiratory problems.

The latest weather event cast an orange hue over the capital Baghdad, where it severely restricted visibility and coated buildings and cars in the dust.

Journalists said that pedestrians wore disposable masks to avoid inhaling the particles.

4. Super Eagles, Mexico to play friendly May 28

The Nigeria Football Federation has announced that the Super Eagles will face the El Tri of Mexico in an international friendly on May 28, 2022.

The match will be played at the AT&T Stadium in Texas.

This was disclosed in a terse statement that read, “Official: Nigeria’s Super Eagles will face the El Tri of Mexico in an international friendly game on Saturday, May 28, 2022, at the AT&T Stadium, Arlington, Texas.”

6. Royal father, 24 others killed as armed herders invade 3 Benue LGAs, cart away motorcycles

A traditional ruler, Zaki Unongo Shaayange and 24 others were Monday night reportedly killed in three separate attacks on communities in Logo, Tarka and Guma Local Government Areas, LGAs, of Benue state by suspected armed herdsmen

The attack also left many hospitalised with severe machete and gunshot injuries.

It was gathered from a community leader, Chief Joseph Anawa that the armed herdsmen numbering about six blocked and took over the Anyiin-Tse Kile road in Ukemberagya Ward of Gaambetiev Logo LGA on Monday night at about 7:15.

7. Killings: Resign now, Northern Elders tell Buhari

The Northern Elders Forum on Tuesday asked the President Muhammadu Buhari, to resign immediately.

According to the group, the President has failed in the critical area of providing security, and as such has ‘nothing new to offer’ Nigerians.

The Forum made the call in a statement issued by NEF Spokesman, Dr Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, on Tuesday.

8. Lagos Police to discipline weed smoking officer

The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, CP Abiodun Alabi has ordered immediate commencement of appropriate disciplinary measures on a Police officer pictured smoking weed at the Ijora area of the state.

In a statement signed by the Spokesperson of the Command, SP Benjamin Hundeyin on Tuesday, the officer was identified as an Assistant Superintendent of Police ASP,
Babatunde Adebayo, serving with Shogunle Division of the Command.

The CP directed that the disciplinary action to be meted on the ASP should be commensurate with his rank.

9. Oyetola, Aregbesola’s factions bicker over Tinubu, Osinbajo

The All Progressives Congress (APC) factions of Osun Governor, Adegboyega Oyetola and Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola are bickering following Vice President Yemi Osinbajo’s declaration of intent to contest for the 2023 presidency.

Commissioner for Works and Transport, Remi Omowaiye, who led Oyetola’s faction to back Asiwaju Bola Tinubu’s presidential aspiration started the social media war.

But former aide of Aregbesola, Wale Alabi, said Osinbajo should be allowed to pick the ticket.

10. Court freezes accounts of business mogul ABG over N1.7bn AMCON debt

A Federal High court sitting in Kaduna has granted an order to freeze all bank accounts linked to a Kaduna based business mogul, Alhaji Bawa Garba of ABG Communications, and Engr. Mohammed Bawa Garba, over alleged N1.7billion debt owed Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON).

AMCON, which is the applicant in suit no. FHC/KD/AMC/1/2022, approached the Court in a Motion Ex-parte dated 28th March, 2022, praying the Court for an order for a Post No Debit (PND) on all accounts operated by the respondents/defendants pending the determination/disposal of the proceedings for the recovery of debt of N1, 738,704,474.01.

The applicant,through its lawyer, Barrister A.A Salisu, explained that the sum is made up of the Principal debt and accrued interest against the defendants pursuant to section 50 of the AMCON Acts, 2019 (as amended).

11. Delta Police Command holds recruitment exam April 20

The Police Command in Delta has scheduled the Computer-Based Test (CBT) for indigenes of the state seeking recruitment into the Nigeria Police constables for April 20.

The Commissioner of Police (CP), Delta Command, Mr Ari Ali, disclosed this in a statement made available to newsmen on Tuesday in Warri.

Ali said that the exercise would commence at 9.20 a.m. at West Gate CBT, Nnebisi Road, Asaba, and advised the candidates to abide by COVID-19 protocols.

12. Hoodlums kill lecturer, tailor In Plateau

A lecturer at the Department of Psychology, Federal University, Gashua, Yobe State, Sani Muhammad Mazadu and a tailor, Safiyanu Sa’id, have been killed during a clash between two rival groups popularly known as Sara Suka around Yankwaba, in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State.

A relative of the lecturer, Jamilu Abdullahi Mazadu, confirmed the sad incident to reporters in Jos on Tuesday .

He said the incident has been reported at the Anguwan Rogo Police Divisional Headquarters.

13. National carrier project faces fresh hurdle

Former workers of liquidated Nigeria Airways have petitioned the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) to stop the process of granting an air operating licence to the proposed national carrier, Nigeria Air Limited until the ghost of the erstwhile airline is laid to rest and all ex-staffers fully compensated.

The group, in response to the public notice inviting possible objections to granting approval to Nigeria Air, said it is unfair to build a new airline on the injustice of the former.

The Federal Government in the race to float a new national carrier this quarter recently applied for Air Operator Certificate (AOC) and Air Transport Licence (ATL) to operate scheduled, non-scheduled passenger and cargo services.

14. PDP consensus candidate will oust APC, says Saraki

Former Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, has said the move by some presidential aspirants in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to form a united force will enable the party to take over power from the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2023.

A statement, yesterday, by the Chief Press Secretary to the Bayelsa State Governor, Daniel Alabrah, said the presidential hopeful spoke while briefing journalists after a closed-door meeting with his co-aspirants, Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State and Bala Mohammed, Governor of Bauchi State, with Governor Douye Diri at Creek Haven Government House in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.

Saraki stated: “We are here to intimate the governor on our efforts to have a consensus candidate.  As you all know, three of us have indicated interest to run on the platform of the PDP. We have been going around talking to the leaders of our party. The governor of Bayelsa is not only a leader but a key stakeholder, who has a role to play in the 2023 election.

15. Deaths from non-communicable diseases rising in Africa, WHO warns

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has alerted Africans to the rising deaths from non-communicable diseases (NCDs) like cancer, cardiovascular ailments and diabetes on the continent.

It pointed out that cancer, cardiovascular diseases and diabetes were responsible for 37 per cent of fatalities in 2019, increasing from 24 per cent in 2000 largely due to weaknesses in the implementation of critical control measures, including prevention, diagnosis and care.

This comes on the eve of a high-level Heads of State and health leaders’ meeting in Ghana to accelerate progress against NCDs.

16. FG, NSE reassess Apongbon Bridge, begin emergency repairs

The Federal Government has commenced emergency repair works on Apongbon Bridge razed by fire on March 23, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.

Federal Controller of Works in Lagos State, Olukayode Popoola, announced this when he led officials of Federal Ministry of Works and Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) on a technical visit to the bridge on Tuesday.

The controller said that while integrity tests results on the bridge were being awaited, a contractor had moved to site for emergency repair works to ensure quick re-opening of the damaged section which was closed to traffic.
