Newspaper Vendor Commits Suicide Over Debt In Delta

A 42-year-old newspaper vendor, Ameachi, hanged himself in his one room apartment at Okpe Road area of Sapele, Delta State; his dangling body was discovered yesterday morning.

A neighbour, Mama Ngozi, said: “We last saw him on Monday when he was leaving the house. Nobody knew when he came back to the house. We never knew he had hanged himself in his room.

“It was only this morning (yesterday) when we began to inhale some foul odour and people come to ask after him that we suspected foul play. He is a very reserved person and hardly talked to anybody. You hardly find him with anybody, male or female.”

At the newspaper vendors office at Olympia area, his colleagues were discussing the incident, but a vendor, who craved anonymity, said the deceased was owing some sum of money.

He said: “He came on Monday and we told him to try and pay what he was owing and he left, later we went to look for him, but we could not find him. Only for us to hear he has hanged himself.”
