EKO HOT BLOG reports that the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF), which represents the thirty-six State Governors, has announced that the Federal Government has agreed to halt additional deductions from state accounts to fulfill obligations to the local government councils under the London Paris Club.
This decision was disclosed by the outgoing Chairman and Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal, following a meeting held on Tuesday.
Tambuwal stated that Minister of Finance, Zainab Ahmed, informed him of the Federal Government’s resolution, which also includes reimbursing the states for the amounts deducted thus far.
During the meeting, Tambuwal also revealed that a new leadership for the forum has been established through consensus. Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, the Governor of Kwara State, has been elected as the new Chairman, while Seyi Makinde, the Governor of Oyo State, assumes the role of Vice-Chairman.
The communique issued after the meeting outlined the resolutions as follows:
“Regarding the leadership of the Forum, the Nigeria Governors’ Forum is pleased to announce that Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, the Governor of Kwara State, has emerged as the new Chairman through a consensus. Additionally, Seyi Makinde, the Governor of Oyo State, has been appointed as the Vice-Chairman.
“Members expressed satisfaction with the successful Induction for new and returning Governors, which took place from the 14th to the 19th of May 2023.
The Governors have committed to fostering collaboration among states through enhanced peer review, promoting sub-national learning, and strengthening relationships with the Federal Government and other institutions.
“Finally, the Chairman of the Forum briefed members that the Honorable Minister of Finance has granted the Forum’s request to immediately cease further deductions from state accounts to fulfill the obligations of the Local Government Councils under the London Paris Club.
