– NiDCOM Chairman has called on NDDC to pay the stranded Nigerian students in the UK.

– The Chairman maintained that many of the students are stranded in the foreign land for non-payment of tuition and other fees.

The Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Nigerians in the Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Hon Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has drawn the attention of the Niger Delta Development Commission to the sufferings of Nigerian students studying in the United Kingdom.

The students whose scholarship is championed by the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) have become stranded in the UK since the Commission has neglected to pay their allowances, tuition, and other incentives that would enable them to cope in the foreign Land.

The Chairman stated that some of the students have complained that they had been suspended by their schools for non-payment of tuition and other fees.

The NIDCOM boss further revealed through the Commission Media, Public Relations and Protocol Unit that she had already communicated to the Minister of Niger Delta, Senator Godswill Akpabio through a written letter dated 18 June 2020 where she drew the Minister’s attention to the desperate state of the students and urged the Ministry to expedite action to avert the situation.

The Chief Executive Officer of NiDCOM who is often referred to as ‘Lady Diaspora’ because of her unyielding interest in the affairs of the Nigerians abroad has several times been described as a sterling Nigerian Amazon, whose major spotlight has been her advocacy and calls for justice and fairness for Nigerians abroad.

There is no denying the fact that interventions are felt in the UK, China, Pakistan, Libya, Saudi Arabia, Russia, Italy, among other countries.

There is no denying the fact that her prompt and timely intervention in the case of Zainab Habibu, Aliyu, a 22-year old girl who was imprisoned in Saudi Arabia for an offense she did not commit, served as a Magic wand for the helpless girl as President Buhari swiftly intervened to help her.

Another milestone in her effort to bring succour to the vulnerable Nigerians in Diaspora is the current evacuations of Nigerians in Diaspora as a result of the COVID-19 Pandemic. To achieve this, the NiDCOM Chairman asked all Nigerians stranded abroad who are willing to return home to provide their information to Mission in their respective host countries, which many of them did, and they are now being brought back home.

Thus, the NiDCOM Chairman’s appeal to NDDC to consider the plight of the desperate students in the Uk by paying their allowances has again demonstrated her zealous compassion for stranded Nigerian citizens abroad. Hence, a serious need for the NDDC to act promptly over the disparaging situation before the name of the country would be put to ridicule by outsiders.
