Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairperson of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), has called for governments at all levels to take more decisive action in curbing human trafficking within Nigeria.

Eko Hot  Blog reports that during a strategic meeting with Hajia Binta Bello, Director-General of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), Dabiri-Erewa emphasized the need for stricter penalties, better collaboration among agencies, and improved funding to combat the issue.

She proposed that traffickers should be publicly named and shamed as a deterrent to other potential offenders.

Additionally, Dabiri-Erewa called for closer cooperation between NAPTIP, NiDCOM, the National Commission for Refugees Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI), and other relevant organizations to effectively address human trafficking in the country.

Dabiri-Erewa also highlighted the importance of more flexible policies and increased funding to enable NAPTIP to fulfill its mandate.

She commended the support of the First Lady, Sen. Oluremi Tinubu, the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), neighboring governments, Nigerian Diaspora Communities, Wema Bank, and NGOs in rescuing and reintegrating trafficking victims.

“We will continue to do our best to save these young ones and encourage safe and regular pathways for migration,” she said.

Hajia Binta Bello, D-G NAPTIP, expressed her gratitude to Dabiri-Erewa, NiDCOM Chairperson for the organization’s support in rescuing 231 young Nigerians from Ghana.

Bello emphasized that addressing human trafficking necessitates joint efforts from the government, civil society, and other key stakeholders.

She also highlighted the importance of raising awareness at all levels to underscore the dangers and risks associated with trafficking.

“We rescued last week 19 girls all pregnant for one man in an estate in Abuja, we received nine girls from Cote D’ivoire, and many others,” she said.

She acknowledged the vital role of the NiDCOM in engaging with Nigerians abroad and expressed her dedication to bolstering the partnership between the two organizations.
