Nigeria and Benin Republic jointly inaugurated the Tsamiya Dry Port Trade Office in Kano State yesterday.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that the new office, located at No. ‘A’ Magaji Rumfa Road, GRA, Kano, was officially commissioned in a ceremony to enhance regional trade.

The Comptroller General of Customs, Bashir Adeniyi, represented by Assistant Comptroller Sambo Dangaladima, stated that this event marks a significant step toward reopening the Segbana-Tsamiya border in Kebbi State.

He recalled that in May, a Federal Government delegation held an inter-ministerial meeting with their counterparts from Benin Republic to discuss logistics, security measures, and the economic impact of operationalizing the border post.

“We are witnessing the opening of a trade office in Kano, a major commercial hub, as part of a broader strategy to enhance trade facilitation and boost regional trade and economic integration between Nigeria and Benin Republic,” said Adeniyi.

He noted the importance of Kano as a key center of commerce and highlighted the need to streamline business processes in the region. This includes establishing an export terminal to support local industries, aligning with the Federal Government’s goals of addressing food security, and strengthening economic ties within Nigeria and across its borders.

Under Adeniyi’s leadership, the Nigeria Customs Service is committed to implementing and enforcing Federal Government policies to achieve economic growth and development, in line with President Bola Tinubu’s renewed hope agenda.

The Director of Customs Authority of Benin, Imorou Idrissou, praised Presidents Bola Tinubu and Patrice Talon for their efforts to strengthen trade and economic relations between the two countries.

Representing the Beninese Customs CG, Idrissou commended the initiative, noting that it will bring relief to importers and facilitate the ease of doing business for Kano businessmen in Benin Republic.

He added that the new trade office will promote and leverage trade agreements, allowing for Kano goods to be cleared in Cotonou, thus enhancing cross-border trade. Additionally, it will implement ICT solutions for proper documentation and tracking of goods, and foster new or strengthen existing business relationships between Kano State and Cotonou for mutual economic benefit.
