Eko Hot Blog reports that an eye-catching closing ceremony brought the curtain down on the 13th edition of the African Games in Ghana on Saturday, March 24th, after an eventful 16-day sporting spectacle across Accra, Kumasi, and Cape Coast.
As the participating nations’ flags paraded amid the tunes of Nigerian hip-hop star Tiwa Savage, the event celebrated sporting excellence and African unity.
Egypt once again reigned supreme, claiming 101 gold medals to finish atop the medal table with a staggering 189 medals (101 gold, 46 silver, and 42 bronze). Nigeria emerged as the runners-up, securing an impressive haul of 120 medals (47 gold, 33 silver, and 40 bronze).
South Africa occupied the third spot with 106 medals (32 gold, 32 silver, and 42 bronze), while Algeria (114 medals) and Tunisia (87 medals) rounded out the top five nations. The host nation, Ghana, despite a slow start, rallied to finish sixth with 68 medals, including 19 gold.
The African Games showcased the continent’s sporting prowess, with athletes from 53 of Africa’s 54 nations in attendance, with only Cape Verde absent from the biennial extravaganza.
Initially scheduled for August 2023, the Games faced delays due to incomplete facilities and marketing revenue issues. However, Ghana’s determination ensured a memorable championship, kicking off with a breathtaking opening ceremony that captured Africa’s rich cultural heritage, sporting spirit, and diversity.
As the closing ceremony unfolded, Ghanaian musicians, including the vibrant Shatta Wale, the charismatic King Promise, and South African sensation Kamo Mphela, added to the festivities, leaving a lasting impression on the thousands in attendance.
With the curtain falling on the 13th African Games, the continent’s athletes and fans alike can look forward to the next edition, set to continue the tradition of celebrating Africa’s sporting excellence and unity through friendly competition.
