EKO HOT BLOG reports that according to the statement, Nigeria’s large economy, vast population, and wealth of natural resources make it a vital player in Africa and a compelling addition to the G20.

The Presidency outlined several key reasons supporting the country’s bid:

  • Economic Influence: Nigeria ranks as one of Africa’s largest economies, essential to the continent’s economic framework and global trade.
  • Population and Market Size: With over 200 million people, Nigeria boasts a massive consumer market critical for foreign direct investment.
  • Energy Resources: As a leading oil producer with significant natural gas reserves, Nigeria could enhance G20 discussions on global energy security and the energy transition.
  • Reforms and Innovation: Ongoing economic reforms and a thriving tech ecosystem, particularly in fintech, align Nigeria with G20 goals for sustainable development and innovation.
  • Global Contributions: Nigeria actively supports international efforts, including the UN’s peacekeeping missions and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), while championing climate action.
  • Geopolitical Role: Strategically located, Nigeria serves as a vital bridge between Africa and global trade routes, fostering deeper trade and diplomatic ties.
  • Regional Leadership: As a key leader in West Africa, Nigeria’s involvement in ECOWAS underscores its commitment to regional stability and integration.

The Presidency reiterated that Nigeria’s inclusion in the G20 would not only amplify the voice of developing nations but also contribute to addressing global power imbalances.

Nigeria G20 Membership

“Nigeria’s membership in the G20 would enhance the group’s representation of Africa while bringing unique perspectives to issues of global importance,” the statement concluded.
