A lady who claimed to be from Switzerland has criticised alleged corruption by personnel of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS).
According to the purported foreigner, Immigration officers at a Nigerian airport accused her of overstaying in the West African nation, thus demanding a huge bribe.
She also claimed she and her daughter nearly missed their flight back to her base in Switzerland due to the antics of the Immigration personnel.
“I just returned from Nigeria. I stayed five weeks. And I got a visa that was issued from the Ambassador here in Switzerland. The Ambassador issued me a two-month visa, and I stayed only five weeks. So I was very shocked and disappointed when I wanted to leave Nigeria; Nigeria Immigration at the airport said I had overstayed, that they couldn’t let me go.

“They then told me I’d have to pay $8,000, which is about N3 million. I told them I can’t have overstayed since I got a visa of two months but stayed for only five weeks.”
Furthermore, the aggrieved lady said the Immigration officers only freed her when she threatened to call the Nigerian Ambassador to Switzerland, Fidelia Akuabata Njeze. “But when I got home, I discovered that they now [sic] put the stamp on the wrong page. Instead of the visa of this year, they now [sic] put the stamp on my last year visa. So that one would still give me a problem if I want to enter Nigeria.”
