EkoHotBlog reports that Nigeria and Mexico have taken a major step to boost their economic relationship with the official launch of a Chamber of Commerce in Abuja. The initiative is expected to open up new opportunities for trade, investment, and business collaboration between the two countries.

Speaking at the inauguration, Mexican Ambassador to Nigeria, Alfredo Miranda, described the event as a turning point in the bilateral relationship. He noted that despite being major economies in their respective regions, trade between Nigeria and Mexico has remained limited and inconsistent.

Ambassador Miranda revealed that in 2024, Nigerian exports to Mexico were valued at approximately $103 million, mainly consisting of a few commodities. Meanwhile, Mexico’s exports to Nigeria stood at around $47 million, with a focus on manufactured goods.

He said the chamber will help create more trade, investment, and business opportunities.

The ambassador noted that trade between the two countries is still very low, even though Nigeria and Mexico are large economies with young, active populations, good locations, and growing industries. He said in 2024, Nigeria exported goods worth about $103 million to Mexico, mostly in a few types of products. Mexico sold around $47 million worth of mainly manufactured goods to Nigeria.

Miranda said the low trade numbers are a big missed chance — not just for money, but also for job creation, knowledge sharing, and economic growth. He said both countries need better systems that help businesses connect and sign real deals. The new chamber should also help share useful information, create jobs, and support business growth.

He called for a new mindset, focusing on what the two countries can achieve together, instead of what hasn’t been done yet. According to him, both Nigeria and Mexico are powerful and influential in their regions and should work closely to lead globally.

The President of the new Chamber, Arim Topete, said it will serve as a bridge to connect businesses, ideas, and opportunities between the two nations.
