Nigeria Military Drops In Global Ranking - See Position
The Nigerian Armed Forces have dropped three places in the 2024 Global Firepower (GFP) military ranking, sliding from 36th in 2023 to 39th out of 145 countries.
This marks a further decline from its 35th position in 2022, indicating a two-year consecutive fall despite recent acquisitions and successes claimed by the military.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that Nigeria’s rank among African countries also slipped from third to fourth, now trailing Egypt, Algeria, and South Africa. Ethiopia, Angola, Morocco, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Tunisia, and Sudan complete the top ten on the continent.
Globally, the United States retained its position as the most powerful military for the 18th consecutive year, credited with “commanding values in many major material, financial, and resource categories.” Russia, China, and India are ranked second, third, and fourth, respectively. South Korea, the United Kingdom, Japan, Turkey, Pakistan, and Italy round out the top ten.
Other notable global rankings include France (11th), Brazil (12th), Indonesia (13th), Iran (14th), and Egypt (15th). Countries like Australia, Israel, Ukraine, Germany, and Spain occupy the 16th to 20th positions.
The GFP rankings are determined by over 60 factors, ranging from the number of military units and financial standing to logistical capabilities and geographic considerations. The formula used allows technologically advanced smaller nations to compete with larger, less-developed powers. Special modifiers, including bonuses and penalties, are applied to refine the rankings.
