Nigeria Must Prepare for War as Lakurawa Group Expands Its Terror Reach – Ex-DSS Operative
Former Department of State Services (DSS) operative Seyi Adetayo has urged swift action following the emergence of a new terrorist group, Lakurawa, cautioning Nigerians that the nation is facing a war-like threat.
In an interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Friday, Adetayo likened Lakurawa to established terror groups such as ISWAP, Boko Haram, and armed bandit factions destabilizing Nigeria’s North East.
“Lakurawa will soon become another name in our discussions on terror unless Nigeria formally recognizes the situation as a state of war and bolsters military and intelligence efforts,” Adetayo warned.

Maj. Gen. Edward Buba, Director of Defense Media Operations, recently confirmed that “Troops are encountering Lakurawa forces in Northwestern states, Sokoto and Kebbi.” Buba reported that the group is connected to Sahelian terrorist networks, particularly from Mali and Niger, who entered Nigeria amid regional instability, with operations concentrated in Sokoto and Kebbi.
Critics have noted that local communities initially accepted Lakurawa, failing to alert authorities, allowing the group’s presence to expand and intensify security risks.
Adetayo urged a massive recruitment drive for the military, arguing that current forces are too few to meet the threat. “Without action, these groups will continue to draw in young people, making Nigeria a perilous country to move around,” he cautioned.

Retired military strategist Maj. Gen. Pat Akem, while acknowledging the seriousness of Lakurawa’s presence, disagreed with declaring a state of war. He assured that President Bola Tinubu has already taken proactive steps to counteract the group. “A war declaration is unnecessary,” Akem argued, noting the president’s directives for a decisive response.
Akem also emphasized that war should not be declared without sufficient resources, urging the military to avoid policing roles that may undermine its reputation and operational focus.
