Tinted glasses
EKO HOT BLOG reports that in response to the rising security concerns in Nigeria, the police have announced their intention to reintroduce permits for vehicles with tinted glass nationwide. The decision comes as the police observed that tinted glass vehicles, particularly among young people, have been increasingly associated with criminal activities.
The Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, shared this information during an interview, revealing that several states had reported instances of crimes involving tinted glass vehicles. However, he emphasized that the final decision would be made following the conclusion of a committee’s review, chaired by the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.
Previously, on March 20, 2022, the police temporarily suspended the issuance of tinted permits under the former IG, Usman Baba. Nevertheless, law enforcement still retained the authority to stop and search vehicles with tinted glass but were instructed not to demand tinted permits.
Many Nigerians welcomed the suspension of the permit, hoping it would reduce harassment by the police. Still, according to Adejobi, the permit’s reinstatement aims to enhance security measures and combat crime nationwide.
Adejobi emphasized, “When the committee submits its report, we are going to act appropriately.” However, he could not provide a specific timeframe for the report’s submission due to leadership changes within the committee.
Furthermore, Adejobi mentioned that the committee’s review would also address issues such as covered number plates, the misuse of revolving lights, unregistered vehicles, and the improper display of vehicle logos instead of number plates. The police aim to establish effective policies to curb these practices.
In addition, Adejobi clarified that while the Inspector-General of Police opposes providing police escorts to unauthorized individuals, some individuals are entitled to such protection by law. Efforts are being made to regularize the deployment of police personnel and collaborate with private security companies to enhance security without compromising regulations.
