Nigeria plans to reopen its embassy in North Korea, according to Patrick Imodu Imologome, the Interim Commissioner for Affairs (Chargé d’Affaires) of Nigeria in North Korea.
Imologome made the announcement during a protocol visit to Russian Ambassador A.И. Mategore in Pyongyang, as reported by the Russian Embassy on Facebook.
Nigeria’s diplomatic ties with North Korea were paused in 2021 after a United Nations ban prohibited hiring North Korean professionals abroad.
The sanctions were imposed in response to North Korea’s continued nuclear weapons and missile development activities.
Despite the UN restrictions, Nigeria maintained cordial relations with North Korea. In 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, Nigeria sought assistance from North Korean medical professionals, who were flown into the country.
However, in 2021, a health professional reported Nigeria’s violation of the UN ban, prompting further scrutiny. This led to the suspension of Nigeria’s embassy activities in North Korea.
With plans to reopen the embassy, Nigeria will become the second African country, after Egypt, to have a diplomatic presence in North Korea.
The move signals a renewed commitment to bilateral relations.
The reopening of the embassy is seen as a step towards re-establishing ties while balancing the complexities of international sanctions and diplomatic engagement.
