Nigeria Top Athletics Table In ‘Ghana 2023’ African Games

Eko Hot Blog reports that Team Nigeria showcased their dominance in the athletics event at the 2023 African Games in Ghana, securing two gold, two silver, and two bronze medals on the final day, capping off their impressive performance in style.

Chinecherem Nnamdi set a new national record on his way to claiming gold in the men’s javelin event, while the quartet of Esther Joseph, Patience Okon-George, Brittany Ogunmokun, and Omolara Ogunmakinju secured gold in the women’s 4x400m final.

Olayinka Olajide secured a silver medal in the women’s 200m, and Sade Olatoye clinched another silver in the women’s shot put event. Consider Ekanem earned his inaugural international individual medal, a bronze in the men’s 200m, while the men’s 4x400m relay team also secured bronze.

These achievements on the last day of the event brought Nigeria’s athletics tally to 11 gold, six silver, and four bronze medals, totaling 21 medals overall.

 

Olajide’s silver was the first of the day for Team Nigeria as she ran a new personal best of 23.18s (-2.6) to finish second behind 100m champion Gina Bass, who won in 23.14s. Having won bronze in the 100m and gold in the women’s 4X100m relay, Olajide has now won a complete set of medals at the 2023 Games.

Consider found solace in the men’s 200m after narrowly missing out on an individual medal in the men’s 100m, seizing the opportunity to claim bronze with a time of 20.80s (-2.8). This marks his inaugural international individual medal for Nigeria, following his gold victory with the men’s 4x100m relay team earlier in the week.

Following Olatoye’s bronze win in shot put, Nnamdi shattered his own national record to clinch gold in the men’s javelin event. His impressive throw of 82.80m occurred on his initial attempt, outperforming all competitors, including 2016 Olympic silver medalist, Julius Yego, who settled for second place.

The women’s 4x400m relay gold then followed with a time of 3:27.29. The men’s team of Emmanuel Ojeli, Samson Nathaniel, Adeyemi Sikiru and Chidi Okezie produced Nigeria’s fastest time in the event since 2004, (3:01.84) but it was only good enough for bronze. Gambia won the race with a Games record of 2:59.12.
