EKO HOT BLOG reports thatWurgi is suspected of being behind the murder of Emir Isa Mohammad Bawa of Gobir in Sokoto State. According to Zagazola Makama, a counterterrorism expert specializing in the Lake Chad Basin, the operation that led to Wurgi’s arrest took place on Saturday, following intelligence reports.
Makama shared on his X handle that Wurgi was tracked to a hospital in Shinkafi town, Zamfara State, where he was receiving treatment for injuries sustained in a clash with a rival group. He had been transported to the hospital with multiple cuts and gunshot wounds.
During the operation, while two of Wurgi’s accomplices managed to escape, another individual, who had assisted in transporting Wurgi in a tricycle, was arrested by the troops.
The late Emir of Gobir, Isa Mohammad Bawa, was kidnapped on July 9, 2024, from Sabon Birnin Local Government Area in Sokoto State. He was killed on August 22 after failed ransom negotiations.
Makama revealed that Wurgi was a key figure in the kidnapping and murder, which involved ransom negotiations, including cash and motorcycles, but ultimately collapsed.
Wurgi, a notorious arms smuggler with international connections, is reportedly related to Bello Turji, another infamous bandit leader, through his grandfather. His son, Sani Duna, is said to act as a getaway biker for Turji, further linking their criminal networks.
Makama emphasized that Wurgi’s arrest represents a significant development in ongoing efforts to tackle terrorism and banditry in Nigeria’s Northwest region.
Wurgi is currently in custody at an undisclosed location, while authorities continue their manhunt for his accomplices.
