The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, affirmed on Tuesday that the Nigerian military will not be used to undemocratically advance the interests of any group, dismissing calls to overthrow the democratically elected government.
Speaking at the opening of the COAS Combined 2nd and 3rd Quarters Conference in Uyo, Akwa Ibom, Lagbaja noted that those advocating for military intervention are mostly young people who have never experienced military rule.

He emphasized that the Nigerian Army is committed to maintaining the “new prestige” it has built over the past 25 years by upholding democratic principles.
“The Nigerian Army will not allow itself to be used to undemocratically sail some interests to power,” Lagbaja stated, highlighting the Army’s determination to protect its hard-earned reputation.
He also acknowledged the continued support from the government, including the recent acquisition of two BELL UH-1 Huey Helicopters for various military operations. Lagbaja assured that the welfare of widows and families of fallen heroes remains a priority.
Addressing the recent nationwide hunger protests, Lagbaja pointed out that such events underscore the need for the Armed Forces to also consider food and social security issues, as they can escalate into broader security challenges.
