Nigerian Army Refutes Claims of Mass Exodus Over Welfare Issues

The Nigerian Army has denied reports of a mass resignation by soldiers due to allegations of corruption and low morale.

EKO HOT BLOG notes that in a statement released on Sunday, Army spokesperson Major General Onyema Nwachukwu called the reports misleading and accused them of being a deliberate attempt to create disaffection and damage the reputation of the Army.

Nwachukwu clarified that service in the Nigerian Army is voluntary and that individuals can leave according to established procedures. He dismissed the claims of widespread resignation due to poor welfare as unfounded and irrational.

“The situation is the same as the Nigerian Army. Personnel are at liberty to disengage from time to time in accordance with laid down procedures as contained in the Harmonized Terms and Conditions of Service (Officers/Soldiers) alike.

“Discharge from the Nigerian Army is routine and in line with laid down procedures.

“Only in an unorganised army would the discharge of personnel be handled haphazardly; hence, the compilation and release of names routinely, as must have been observed in the case of the Nigerian Army over the years.

“This process allows for personnel who are about to either mandatorily or voluntarily disengage to adequately prepare and process entitlements, emoluments, pensions, and gratuity for the period of service to the nation,” he said.

Nwachukwu explained that the discharge process is routine and well-organized, allowing personnel to prepare and process their entitlements, pensions, and gratuity as per their service terms.

He criticised the reports for failing to conduct due diligence and for making spurious allegations about low morale and corruption. Nwachukwu emphasized that the welfare of Army personnel is a top priority under the leadership of Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja.

“The Nigerian Army remains committed to the welfare of its personnel,” he said. “It is regrettable to see attempts to distort the truth for sensationalism.”

Nwachukwu urged the media to verify information before publication and to avoid spreading disinformation.
