EKO HOT BLOG reports that the Nigerian government has strongly condemned the death of a Nigerian lady, Chizoba Favor Eze, who died in an Ethiopian prison. Eze died on Sunday, March 12, at the Kaliti Prison in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, following alleged physical aggression.
The Chairman and CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, expressed her concern about the circumstances that led to Eze’s death.
In a statement issued by the spokesman of the Commission, AbdulRahman Balogun, Dabiri-Erewa revealed that the Nigerian Mission in Ethiopia has demanded a full investigation into the matter.
The NIDCOM boss disclosed that the Commission is in contact with the Mission in Ethiopia and will thoroughly probe the incident. She also expressed worry over the reported conditions of some Nigerians serving various jail terms in Ethiopia, most of whom were involved in drug-related offenses.
Dabiri-Erewa said that the Nigerian Mission in Ethiopia has proposed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) from the Nigerian Correctional Service on the transfer of sentenced persons to Nigeria with the Ethiopian authorities to complete their respective jail terms in Nigeria. The proposal is awaiting a response from Ethiopia.
Although Ethiopia had granted amnesty to Nigerian prisoners in 2019, a number of them still found their way back to the country and allegedly committed the same drug-related crimes and were re-arrested.
The NIDCOM boss extended her condolences to the family of Chizoba, who was said to have died in the prison. The circumstances that led to her death remain unclear, but the Nigerian government has demanded a thorough investigation to determine the cause.
This development is coming amid growing concerns over the treatment of Nigerians in foreign countries. The Nigerian government has been called upon to take proactive measures to protect the rights of its citizens abroad.
