Nigerian Govt to Begin Tolling on Major Highways Including Lagos-Ibadan Expressway

The Federal Government has unveiled plans to introduce tolling on several major highways across Nigeria following the completion of construction and renovations.

During an inter-ministerial press briefing in Abuja, held in conjunction with the 64th Independence anniversary celebrations, the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, highlighted that the Lagos-Ibadan expressway is one of the primary projects set for tolling as it nears completion.

“We are completing the Lagos-Ibadan expressway, and it will be tolled,” the minister announced.

In addition to the Lagos-Ibadan expressway, other key routes that will be tolled include the Second Niger Bridge, the Abuja-Kano road, and the Makurdi to 9th Mile route in Enugu State.

Umahi emphasized the significant involvement of the private sector in funding and managing these toll projects. He explained that private entities will collaborate with the Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission and the Ministry of Works to secure funding and oversee the construction, maintenance, and toll collection for these highways.

He also noted that the Keffi-Makurdi road, which has already been completed, will be the first to be tolled.

To improve efficiency, Umahi mentioned that his ministry is working with the Ministry of Finance to implement a paperless payment system for tolls.

Furthermore, he reassured the public of the government’s commitment to enhancing confidence in the quality and safety of the roads.

“We are working on various roads, including the Lagos-Ibadan, the Makurdi to 9th Mile in Enugu State, and the Abuja to Lagos route. These roads will be tolled, but our aim is not just to toll them; we want to instill confidence in their use,” Umahi stated.
